Hi All,
Can any of you recommend a good engine (probably carbs) tuner in Yorkshire, Thirsk / Northallerton area would be ideal. Need some magic hands to dial out popping lumpyness.

There is the rolling road in Northallerton , these guys tune a lot of historic rally escorts etc etc ( Not used them myself )

Dead right Mike !

I would head south for 356 fettling . I am surrounded by very competent 911 fixers in Cheshire , especially for things like remapping 964 ECUs , but they never ( hardly ever ) have 356s in their shop so rarely experience finely balanced, interaction of settings for carbs, points, and tappets .

I do my own basic tuning on a pair of 356s , a '55 pre A running a 912 engine with Solexes , and a '64 C with stock engine on Zeniths ....
BUT they always run better if I take them down to Steve Winter at Jaz ( St Albans ) , he loves working on them .

PS Essex is the county to be in if you want most choices on 356 fettling !

There are many fine 356 experts in Essex but you have to pass quite a few places that could also do a good job to get there from Yorkshire. What type of tunning are you asking about a service/tune up or a rolling road session?

Thanks for getting stuck in with your ideas. It's a 1960 356 Roadster. I see Mike commented above and indeed this car normally ends up with Paul and the team at PRS. However the car is currently being looked after by my father in law just outside Northallerton, whereas I live in Brighton. It's not coming south anytime soon. PRS last serviced and set up two years ago and it drove fantastically well. I drove the car last Saturday and it was clearly in need of a re tune, popping exhaust, lumpy power delivery and probably out of balance carbs.

So is there anyone up Northallerton way or do we need to be brave, swallow a bit of Elfrink and try to improve things ourselves.?

It sounds to me like a classic case of old petrol and the need for an "Italian Service", i.e. A thrash on the A19........

As an aside I thought I'd treat my 356 to some super unleaded a few weeks back, big mistake.
Not only did the fuel smell stale as I filled up (presumably they don't sell enough of it to keep it fresh) but the car ran like a bag of kn*ckers, lumpy wouldn't idle properly and smelt of petrol.
I realised what it was so just used it up and then filled up with regular unleaded.
The problem disappeared very quickly, car back to its normal cheeky self!
A friend with a helicopter(!) keeps Avgas (aviation fuel) which apparently doesn't "go off".
Modern fuels seems to last about six months.

I agree with Simon - stale fuel would be my first thought ...

Ian Clark is in Lincolnshire, 2.5 hours drive from you. thrash it there, put new fuel in and then get it tuned by a master carb man?

Has Ian moved up from down south ? Where is he now then ?
