The vw replacement alternator number is 021-903-023-A,
On the 914 parts catalog it is 022 903 023.

Looking at images online i see the vw has some kind of suppressor on it (causing shorts until remedied) the one on my engine does not have this. It also has no numbers on it.

Does the 914 alternator have the suppressor? Can i fit the vw numbered alternator without issues?

It's 1700 w code.

What suppressor do you mean , do you have a picture of yours, I have a few of these alternators

The top picture shows the alternator with suppressor fitted. The one on my w code didn't have this fitted. Not sure what the essential (or not) nature of it is. Also not sure if it would interfere with any circuit or regulator for example.
