who has done this successfully?
I cannot and it is driving me spare!
not much on you tube except for Peter Morgan , who resorted to taking a knife to trim some of the rubber, dont particularly want to do that, as I have seen some windows with the rubber fitted so know it can be done.
but how?
did the original fitters have a special tool to compress rubber?
have tried washing up liquid warming the rubbers, silicone lubricant, levering in with trimming tool, it just doesnt want to stay in
any help much appreciated
does anyone offer this service as I have spent hours trying

Hi Andrew,

I remember battling with mine for hours when I did mine years ago. I came to the conclusion that it was impossible and that my rubbers were the wrong one as they would always pop out and you were constantly chasing your tail.

After leaving them a few days I tried again with a different technique and they all went together easily so it can be done!
If I remember correctly the technique was to fit them pretty dry and use your fingers and thumbs to massage the rubbers in.
If they were too wet they tended to come back out. I think you are trying to put pressure on the rubber in a localised position for a few seconds whilst you feel the rubber slowly move and seat. Then slowly work your way around but make sure it is all seated as you go. Once you have too much soap or silicon it seems to become impossible.

Give it another try - when they go in right it doesn't take too long to do.

Sorry for the semi hi-jack. I need to replace the glass in mine, does that involve taking the frame apart or do you leave it 'assembled'? (SWB chrome type)

Can be a bit difficult but, as Andrew says, suddenly it all comes together.
I replaced the outer rubbers recently and found that starting on the hinge side worked best for me. Press the rubber well down on the inside edge and the ease the outer edge into place with a slim blunt tool. I used an old tableware knife but it really had no sharp edge. I The part that goes round the back corner and the area round the closing hinge were the worst You may well have to trim the edge of the rubber to fit round the mounting here. I did use washing up liquid (I did try rubber lubricant too but found that was a problem).

Now, if you are talking about replacing the glass rubber then I pass. I tried half-heartedly the do this to another set of windows and gave up. I reckon some sort of ingenious clamp is needed to compress the hinge bar into the remaining frame. And then it may not be a immediate result - more a compress, leave overnight and then compress again etc. Anyone done this?

Thanks, will do but can only get 1 screw undone and don't want to ruin the heads on the seized ones.

After further research Dave Hillman (US) advises a rubber mallet!

C3s yes will need to take the straight edge off the frame to replace glass. if the screws don't come out easily you could use a very fine dremmel cutting disc to cut a groove for extra grip , then get new screws , they are readily available from ebay etc, I have used kays fixings quite a bit in my resto and very good service from them.

2nd for fitting dry - I've done a few and you push them in hard to the channel and you'll hear a pop as they seat. Its not that hard once you get the techique right. Lubrication just makes them come out as you already know.

Thanks for your encouraging advice. The screw head is fine but a lot tighter than the one already removed. Luckily the rubber is great and has previously had glass attached so it's 'bedded in' and should re-assemble ok. The car was vandalised prior to my purchase. Thanks again, Paul.

i dissembled mine completely, - frame apart, glass out all seals out. I will never ever ever do it again......

1. Dissembly - on each window, at least one of the small screws holding the corner L brackets in had seized so i had to drill them out. I replaced them with stainless steel cross head screws rather than steel slot head.

2. Assembling the frame - Not so much a pain in the ar$e, more of a pain in the chest as i used my chest as the base against which to crush the frame so i could get the screws in. once the screws had some purchase, screwed them up each a bit at a time to ensure good alignment. I needed to let my chest recover before i could do the second frame. I used porsche seals and had to get the first set replaced as both gave a huge kink near the rear catch. The replacements are still not perfect but better. I fitted these seals dry and without any warming.

3. Outer seals - I had been trying over the course of a week to fit just one and they kept popping out all the time. I mentioned it to Garry at Visualfx whilst i was over at his one saturday and he (actually one of his boys) showed me how to do it using a blunt trimming tool and rubber lubricant spray. Basically, he took one of the long sides (but no reason why you cant use the front hinge side) and worked the seal into place using the trim tool. It will slip out occasionally but you just have to persevere. He did half of one window in about 5 mins, it took me an hour when i got home to do the remaining 50%. I still havent done the other window outer seal because the first one was such a pain.....
