1973 911T engine bay sound proofing pad/mat

I'd like to replace the black sound proofing pad in the engine bay of my '73 911. Can anyone recommend a good supplier of an original quality product with perfect fit?

I was advised this week by the local OPC that the engine bay sound mat is not available through Porsche Classic.
I have ordered one through Design911 and will come back here when I see what it's like.

I just went to Appbiz and they had a really nice one. Has a layer on it that stops the foam degrading into chunks.

I think they may supply to Porsche, but not certain.

Hi, I too am interested in this. Are the Appbiz products better than Porsche? I see Appbiz stock three types of sound mat: deluxe (their standard one), ultimate (a higher grade product) and updated (a racing spec product). I'd be interested to hear about any views on their deluxe and ultimate products versus what Porsche now supply.

We are just about to make a sample batch of sound deadening panels using a 12mm thick material

We are using a Class Zero Fire Retardent Closed Cell Foam with a self-adhesive backing.

The adhesive has been tested to 180 degC and should be up to the job.

We are having them CNC knife cut to the correct shape.

If these work out we also plan to make the engine sound mats for the 1965 - 1971 cars with the correct 'bobble' backed material.

We already use this on the Perlon carpet sets we make.

Been a bit slow responding on this, but here are some photos of the mat I received from the very helpful guys at Design 911. I suspect most replacements from other suppliers will be similar.
This appears to be a regular piece of foam that has been sealed on one side to reduce the probability of crumbling over time. It does appear to be closed cell foam but unlike the original mat does not have a dampening base layer (high density) to reduce panel drumming/resonance. Back in the day I used to engineer photocopiers for noise reduction and this wouldn't have been much use.
I wouldn't like to say this is non-flammable either. I plan to cut a piece off and do a flame test before considering whether to fit it. Flame retardancy is VERY important in this area, especially if you haven't changed your fuel lines recently or checked your fasteners.
In summary, It looks the part but I'm not sure it will either reduce cabin noise. If any of the other mats mentioned above have BOTH quoted flame retardancy and has a dampening base attached to the foam, please share the name.

I tried burning a small piece of the mat bought from Design 911 and while it is only my inexpert opinion, it appeared to self extinguish. From a flammability viewpoint therefore, it appears OK - with all the usual disclaimers, etc. Should add it doesn't have any adhesive applied and a solvent contact adhesive (like EvoStick) would of course probably be highly inflammable.
Do any of the others have a sound deadening substrate/base layer to their foam main layers?

In regards to the later long hood pads (72/73), a member of the Early S Registry has his own solution. I'm familiar with his material and it's also rated for engine compartment use. It's very close to the one used during most of 71, and a good substitute for 72/73. There are suitable solutions for "edging" the pad in black.

We make and ship the correct "dotted" earlier sound pad (65 to very early 71).
