general engine advice

i'm looking to fit a type 4 into a 912, it would be injected but purely for normal road use with the accent on torque and longevity. Must i start with a 2 litre Porsche unit or, with the plethora of aftermarket parts for these engines, would a 1.7 Porsche unit be just as good a start, bearing in mind that crank, p's and c's would all be renewed. The 2l Porsche heads i know have repositioned plug for better combustion, but then again, the 1.7 heads with smaller ports will give more torque low down. Any thoughts gratefully received

There's a fair bit you can do with these engines - many options and combinations to look into.

Iirc a 1.7 can easily be made into a 1.9-ish with new p&c's if you go for 96mm pistons and still use the original FI.

Theres a whole thread on heads here - 1.7 heads are considered good reliable parts

With the 1911? P&c's you will need to get the 1.7 head honed to fit the bigger cylinder. i'm delving into my 1.7 now with a view to deciding my build options.

That's a big topic.

You can get a lot of bang for buck out of a type4 & they are strong but you can also spend lots of cash if you want to go crazy.

1.8 heads fit straight onto the 1911cc barrels without machining

thanks gents, good thread on 1.7 heads....i guess, if you went crazy, you'd end up using only the case

perhaps, a good bottom is where it starts.....c/weighted, nitrided 74mm crank must be essential, eh?
