I know the answer is likely to be whole suspension refresh on a car that is probably still on all original bushes, but do you think its is more likely bushes or shocks?

Body control seems pretty good, but any imperfection in the road makes the whole thing clatter like a an old bus, and potholes cause a massive thump.

The rear shocks look recent (aftermarket white things) but don't know anything about the front..

Is there a quick win here or do I just need a to refresh the whole lot. I might be tight getting it all done before spa..

New shocks will always help unless you know their history. Has it been lowered too much?

Thanks, yep it is going to need shocks I am sure. I think the fronts are Boge.
Also wondering about shock mounts. They way it rides right now I wouldnt be surprised to find something has completely disintegrated somewhere in the suspension-body attachment points.
I think I am answering my own question..

lol It's all pretty easy and not too costly to DIY. Not sure if it fits in your timescales though.

Mine was crashing and thumping over potholes until I raised it by an inch.

I'd suggest trying that before opening you wallet

Not KYB shocks, are they?

I refreshed my suspension about 5 years ago and used Superpro bushes. It was immediately obvious that they were allowing the suspension to move more in reaction to the road surface and the car was no longer crashing through bumps and imperfections. Not difficult and not expensive

Thanks guys, it isn't that low..but I might try raising it a bit just to see. It isn't just potholes (although they are bad) its anything other than smooth road..

KYB? Havent dismantled the front to see the struts. The rear shocks are entirely unlabelled, so God knows. Standard green Bilsteins seems to be the way forward..but, Spax anybody? Cheaper and adjustable, apparently..

Bushings definitely makes big difference as well as shocks. When I compared my old bushings with new elephant racing the old ones were both softer and worn down, would not be surprised if you have metal to metal contact over those bumps... New ones holds suspension firmly in place as well as cushions the ride, but you should try and find ones that are oversize big as originals were and need to be pressed or bonded in place. There seem to be many rubber and plastic variants that is thinner and easy to mount but will were down more quickly as the suspension motion will cause them to slide where originally meant to flex in the rubber.

Not sure how to find oversize, but I know elephant racing ones are meant to be hard to fit/need a special tool, and therefore snug..? But, $$$$.

A search around Spax on IBs has put me off that option...so have just bought a pair of lightly used Bilstein standard rear shocks off eBay, so just looking for cheap source for front Bilstein for Boge inserts now. Design 911 seem best price in Uk..

I found the cheapest Bilstein inserts to be Rose Passion even with the delivery charge.

Thanks Yes, snug, hard fit I think would be preffered, so that the rubber doesn´t slip on the metal as suspension is moving. Originally they are bonded to the metal.

Ok, started dismantling at the rear, and hey, guess what. Shocks from Wal-mart. This is a good start

You may just notice a slight improvement with Bilsteins...
