I've just bought a 912e,in long beach at the mo waiting to be shipped,the engines in these models are they proper porsche engines or are they type 4 vw units
I know the orig 912's used 914 engines but not sure on the later models

The early 66-69 used a Porsche engine (356 style), the later 912E used a version of the 914 (VW Type4) engine. The 912E was a one year only special,

The 912E engine is based on the VW type 4.

Different inlet manifolds and heads as I remember as one has 4 studs and the other 3 for the manifold to attach.

Also a completely unique to the 912E exhaust system. If yours is a California car it should have thermal reactors and all the anti smog kit.

They are sought after in 912E circles in the states due to rarity. Over here you would be better off without them.

I had one for a few years.

As already mentioned, 912e's have a VW based type iv installed with Porsche designed 914 heads, 3 manifold studs, bigger ports and different spark plug angle. They run J Jetronic rather than D Jet as with 914s.

Gearbox is 915 with a different ratio on first or fifth, and a flywheel/clutch to match the motor.

First thing I did was to ditch the smog kit and thermal reactors. The whole exhaust is model specific and caused me the most headaches, everything else is pretty straight forward.

With some basic tweaking and maybe a swap to carbs you might see about 110-120bhp, if you want more then it starts getting spendy almost to the point of fitting a 911 motor being more economical.

Essentially apart from the engine it's pretty much a 1976 911 2.7s parts wise.

Transmission also has a unique input shaft to mate with clutch & flywheel.
