Hello everybody
After messing around with the ignition system on the 12, I can finally take it for its MOT.
The 050 just kept misbehaving . I changed all the components relating to the distributor but still misbehaved.
I finally did a straight swap with a dizzy form a 2.0l 914 and the car has never run so well. I have now borrowed a dizzy from a 1.7l 914 and it is ok, but I will need a new one .
So the question is . How good are the 022, 031? I have been thinking of a 123 programmable number. Anyone using one of these? If yes, how is it?

Go for the 123

I have installed one on mine and its night and day compared to the worn 022. It will also be cheaper than trying to find a 022 or 31 in good condition or having it rebuilt

I have a rebuilt 022 in one car and a 123 in the other. Both are great. Bruce Smith in the states will sell you a 022 or build your 50 to the correct curve. The 123 is a little cheaper and you never have to adjust the points again.

Just to throw a cat amongst the pigeons - I have an RSR 0012, plus Pertronix, on my car and I like it.

If you look at the advance curves for a 022, RSR 0012 and the 123 ignition (the version with the built-in advance maps), they're all kind of similar.

022s are old, expensive, German-quality items, and the guy that built my engine rated them because the casings were iron and don't wear like the cheap aluminium casing of the RSR (which is really just a re-curved cheap-piece-of-shite 009). I opted for the RSR 0012 anyway, since it got good reviews and would be brand new, and it was one of the many things I did which hacked him off.

I guess you can't really go wrong with any of these. If I were doing my car again, I'd take a mappable 123 and run the built-in 022 curve with the aim of fiddling with it (and burning a nice big hole in the top of all my pistons) further down the line.

or if you like to mess about with engines / timing etc.... and like gizmo's get any cheap shitty 009, lock the advance mech. and add one of these programmable units from Aldon and make your own curves
