DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Hello folks, nothing too bad thankfully, but it kind of annoys me a lot!

If I press the brake pedal, the position light on the driver side (LHD vehicle) comes on and only the brake light on the opposite side at the back comes on. When the lights are switched on, if I press the brake pedal the rear lights goes off and only the passenger side brake light comes on. As soon as I release the brake pedal, the rear lights comes back on.

Looks like some "earth" issue...but to be honest, have no idea where to start looking!

Any pointer?

The car was originally a 1971 911T 2.2 that has now been upgraded to S/T spec.

I start by jiggling all the fuses and gently sand off the ends and the connectors if they look mucky...
Then I'd take the rear lenses off and check out all the wiring in the rear lights, making sure that its properly earthed.. Clean up connectors and bulb seats,etc. If you have a multi meter you can check whats going on with the individual bulbs. Also, probably worth checking that your brake light switch (on the brake pedal itself - if its like mine) is clicking on and off and that wiring from there is ll connected up.
My guess is that its an earth problem at the rear lights.

It does sound like an earth problem, but....

Before you do anything, check that the rear tail/brake bulbs are the correct type and installed correctly. the light housings aren't that great and it is possible to put the bulbs in the wrong way round.

I'm not that familiar with the early cars but on the later ones, the bulbs have staggered pins but it is still possible to put them in the wrong way and you get some odd effects.

Next thing to do would be to isolate and test each side by disconnecting each rear lamp connector in the engine bay. They are the round connectors in each rear corner of the engine bay. See if you can get one side working correctly, then the other, then both.

Or buy and fit one of Jonny's replacement fuse panels. Finally got round to fitting it this week Jonny - all went well after some wrestling with the thick wires
