DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

I'm about to fit new inserts into my front Boge struts, but there are no instructions with the new inserts.
When I did my 912 ones a few years ago I remember adding oil.

Do I still need to do this for a '74, and if so approx how much oil?

I have tried to Google for an answer, and he Dempsey booksdon't seem to mention this.

If you have a complete cartridge to install into what was previously a 'wet' leg there is no reason to add any oil.

If you are just replacing the pistons and seals then you will still need the correct shock absorber fluid.

There was an idea with SWB legs that oil was needed between the housing of the cartridge and the casing of the strut leg nut this is a but of a myth.

The idea was that the oil helped the insert to keep cool by aiding heat transfer but as oil isn't the greatest thermal conductor it doesn't achieve much of a result.

Also some of the Koni inserts people used to fit into SWB legs didn't locate correctly as they were incompatible with the strut body.

This meant that the insert could move and 'knock' against the strut body.

Filling the leg with oil made the 'knock' inaudible but didn't really correct the fault.

I was told to fill the leg with anti freeze!
That was 20 years ago and it is still in there....
The person who told me to do this in hindsight was probably pulling my leg, but that went over my head...

Well 'Glycol' would have much better heat transfer than oil and would make more sense.
