The clock on my car intermittently stops working, can anyone advise on what the best next steps would be?

My has never worked. Seeing that I disconnect the battery every time it is parked I haven't bother fixing it but if you do a search on here there is someone that will fix it for you. I don't think it is cheap

Mine works whilst driving then stops an hour or so after it's parked up.

I can envisage the way things would go if I attempted to take my clock apart!

The clock is an electro-mechanical system. A common fault is the small set of points inside the clock, they make an electrical connection, which causes one of the points arms to spring back and wind the mechanical mechanism. On two clocks I found that cleaning the two contact pads of the points with fine emery paper was sufficient to get them going again. The hard bit is carefully prising open the bezel rim that is crimped onto the main body of the clock.

Fantastic I'll give John a go, price seems reasonable and its a job I didn't fancy tackling.
