Just wondering what the thoughts are on this and does anyone know of a company that can do this? I know it's rare but there can be workshop fires and due to the high parts prices even thefts, but would anyone insure a car with no mot or tax? Any thoughts ?

I think there was a thread on this a little while ago, and basically you're better off just insuring it as a normal car - there's little to no benefit in an off-road or laid-up policy, however if the car is being restored away from home it might be a little more difficult!

I have insured all my 'project cars' from the off - I used RH insurance (now ERS), and as said above just third part, fire and theft like a normal car. They use the VIN as identifier.
All mine were mostly on my premises, but they did cover while the shells were away being painted.

Interesting Mick. They wouldn't cover my shell unless it was in my garage.

I have my car with hagerty. They were happy to do a laid up cover. Think it was about £70.

Hagerty cover all mine - which includes the Alfa which is undergoing resto

Rh insured mine whilst it was being worked on in various different workshops. I just told them the address no problem.

Hagerty also insured mine whilst it was being restored in my garage.

Thanks guys, I may leave it at my home garage then only send it out once the body is to be done, as the mechanical bits might be done at my home by the mechanic, I think I will sleep easier with a policy on the car just in case as you never know !

Glad to see people using Hagerty- I actually work for them (although not on the insurance side) so I'm biased! I do know they cover all sorts of weird & wonderful things- from individual wheels to rotten shells. Laid up cover is a few quid, wherever you buy it, and it just gives you that peace of mind in my opinion.

Does it get a bit more complicated when you want agreed value, say restoring an RS shell?

Varies between underwriters, usually possible with either photos or written valuation.

Ned to check on this, but it's my understanding that your car insurance is nul and void if your car is in a commercial workshop having work done.
Theft, damage or total loss on their premises is on their insurance, not yours.
