2.2E Rebuild

My Engines been sitting in bits for a few months now and the time has come to start thinking about the rebuild. I could do with some advice on which way to take the build and i'll hopefully use this thread to keep track of my progress. The car will be used mainly for light Weekend road use. I'd ideally like a bit more power than stock but I'm trying to get the complete resto in under a certain Figure which doesn't give me unlimited funds. I'd like to try and get the rebuild to come in under £6k(ish). I was going to tackle the rebuild myself but it turns out a friend of a friends Dad might just be an excellent mentor to guide me through/assist in the rebuild. I'm going to take the box of bits over to him in a couple of weeks to see what he says.

I'm going to get the machining done by Rob Walker, he seems to get good recommendations. -

Oil Bypass
Line Hone if needed
Crank Regrind ( has very mild wear)
All studs seem Rock solid so seems a shame to disrupt them but any advice on this much appreciated.
Anything else recommended?

Seeing as i'm on a budget I figured getting the Cylinders rebored to 85mm and fitting JE's would be a reasonable option? Nickel silicon plating the cylinders a good idea?

I've also read about using 2.7 cylinders rebored to 92mm and various combos of Crank, rods, Cams and P/C's. Is there a go to easily available tried and tested combo anyone would recommend or is Stock the way to go?

For those that haven't seen my resto thread here it is after sitting Dormant for 30 years.-

Hi Ash (?)

Saw your reply on the other thread and it is unfortunate you didn't get any replies here.

Personally I would rebuild stock but there are others on here who would disagree. I say this because 'in the real world' on the road there is going to be only a small difference between the performance of a slightly modified engine and standard. Different if you are building something special or for a particular intended purpose. A 2.2E engine with mfi is a sweet performer and as far as I can see a couple of chaps on here have done full rebuilds to stock. The search function is your friend.
You might want to look at threads by, or pm, JohnM for specific advice.

Keep posting, you will eventually get through to good advice as you go. It's also holiday and Ddk tour time so lots are away relaxing just now so some will be slower to reply at the moment.

All the best.

Regards
Mike

JohnM rebuilt his 2.2E to a mildly higher tune .. have a search for his thread on here as that will give you some pointers ( oops , just read Mike has given you the same advise  )

With my 2.4S , I rebuilt it stockish, just upped the CR & made sure the heads were nice and then built the rest for strength / ability to rev safely etc which included heavy duty springs, Ti retainers etc

I agree, stock is best, but rarely achieved. In my experience the money is best spent on gas flowing the heads, especially the area around the inlet valves, and making sure the compression ratio is at least where it was when you started.

You can only really increase power by fitting a more sporting cam, which effectively gives more at the top and less at the bottom, so a real pain on the roads where torque counts.

My engine is based on a 2.2E. Now has 85mm Wossner forged pistons (10.0:1 CR) in original cylinders, ARP fasteners throughout, WebCam 'S' cams and matching hardened rockers, Turbo Thomas headers/muffler = 205bhp and 165lbft. But I have ECU/EFI so peaky nature of the 'S' cams no longer a real problem.

My 2.2E ran 190 BHP on Bob's dyno with the standard E cam.

I think the E cam is the secret here for a nice road engine, makes for a tractable engine.
Years ago I built my first 911 engine, a 2.4 E with S Pistons, Bob Watson almost insisted I kept the E cams. he was so right.

.....from a drivers point of view I'd have to say I agree as the E cam provides so much torque.......but then I'm not technical and no expert and just do exactly what Nick tells me!

Depends what you want from a car

Also depends if you have programmable ignition timing and fuelling...

My first engine rebuild was that engine and it had mech injection from the E so nothing programmable!

Bob tuned it on Ossellis rolling road with a very long screwdriver.
Those were the days! :drunken:
