This might be interesting for somebody. You certainly couldn't get an engine for $6500 in the UK. However, it doesn't say who built the engine.

Paul at T2D has just advertised one in the classified for £4k in bits needing a rebuild.

If you know of any up for grabs a bit more reasonably priced - let me know - in the market for a project engine.

Not trying to wind anyone up, and I'm not making comment on this or any other engine for sale, but in real terms are there many fundamental differences between say a vw beetle engine and a 356 engine and a 912 engine?

I'm in the process of planning a 356 rep build for my Mrs - don't have the budget for a "proper" engine but interested to understand what I could learn from a Porsche engine and potentially apply to a vw engine

Very similar in principle but very different beasts when you get down to the detail.

Bore and stroke are different for a start.

The 912 crankshafts were counterweighted, thus allowing higher revs (VW were not)

912 cranks were 8 dowelled (VW only had 4 dowels)

912 crankcases were a much tougher alloy than VW unit, far less likely to need align boring come rebuild time.

912 cylinder heads had larger valves than VW and a totally different port design.

912 had superior design con rods to VW.

912 engines had a slightly more advanced oil filtration system (although only slightly!) a bypass system with sump filter as opposed to simply relying on the sump filter on a VW.

912 had twin carbs from the factory vs VWs single carb.

Distributor advance is totally different on a 912 compared to VW.

These are just a few of the differences between the 2 engines, when you get down to it the only interchangeable part is the dynamo!

The 912 engines had twice the power output of the VWs from the factory, so were designed to withstand the stresses produced by this power for a reasonably long amount of time.

VW engines can be brought upto and well beyond the spec of a factory 912 engine for a lot less money due to the fact that they were produced in far greater numbers than the 356/912 engines so a no brainier really if you are building a VW or a replica, unless you are set on trying to convince everyone that your replica is the real deal.

PPS I have to agree with you about the reasonably priced. Especially when I saw the some end play comment. Doesn't that mean the case off?

Wow, thanks! Really interesting info, and kind of surprising to me also, as I was thinking there would be a lot in common between the two

I'm not planning on passing it off as real - the intent is a fun 356 coupe outlaw / hotrod for the mrs (surprise 40th birthday present). I was more interested if there's things I can copy or implement without massive cost but sounds like it makes more sense to follow traditional VW tuning routes to get to around 100bhp

yes, that would need a complete strip down to find out the cause.
