Does anyone know if the original 1969 911S clutch disc (part number 901.116.017.01) was made of asbestos?

Someone posted a copy of the manual explaining about the codes of Porsche Standard Number, and the second last digit indicates the material.

Number 7 is asbestos.

There is a 7 in the disc part number but it's in the third last digit, not second last, so it is confusing.

Anyone have an answer?

As far as I know most/all clutch linings (together with brake pads & linings) used to contain asbestos up until relatively recently - so the answer is almost certainly 'yes'.

Since the '69S clutch plate was a one-year only version (thinner than earlier & later plates), any 'new' disc you come across will almost certainly be many years old & hence very likely to contain asbestos.

OK thanks. Do you know if Fichtel & Sachs is now making a modern version (asbestos-free) disc of the same 7mm thickness for the '69S pressure plate?

I don't think new ones have been made for many years.

I bought several NOS for my 904 replica - I would say the newest was probably 30 yrs old.

I have read on Pelican (I think) that there is a specialist called Kennedy who can replace the clutch linings on existing discs with a more modern friction material but they are based in USA, not here. Anyone know if there is such a specialist in the UK?

The other option is that "014" discs are available as new from Porsche for the copper-faced pressure plate ('67S/'68S), this will obviously be asbestos-free. Do you know if the copper-faced PP is as strong as the '69S version?

'67/'68S used the std thickness clutch disc - only the '69S used the thinner disc - to allow for the thickness of the steel coating applied to the alloy pressure plate's mating surface.

There are UK companies who can reline brake shoes - they should be able to reline a clutch disc.

I would think the amount of asbestos dust given off by a clutch plate in normal driving would be negligible ...

I would agree, just take precautions when physically dealing with the disc.

My mate had his 924Turbo clutch disc relined (Is that the word?) somewhere in Doncaster. I'll get the details and post it.
