Just been reading the 911&PW article on 914s (Andrew is still telling people the blue sixer has FIA papers!), very enjoyable. But as a soon to be 914 driver, I am a bit conflicted...
Johhny said "used as a reconnaissance car by the works drivers...it wasn't much liked because they couldn't hang the tail out"
Moggy said "they should have come out with me"
Johnny said "...so nimble, chuckable with no risk of the back end getting out of shape"
Moggy said "he should have come out with me"
Looking forward to getting mine

"it wasn't much liked because they couldn't hang the tail out"
Waldegard told me that himself, he far preferred the control he had in a 911

You could hang the tail out as much as you like in a 914. It just needs a setup that allows you to do that. However , sideways isn't always the quickest. Although it sure is fun
I remember being at a test day around 2010 at Walters Arena above Merthyr . The then uk BHRC champion took me for a couple of laps in his Escorts Mk2. I wasn't impressed in the car. I felt it was more a point and squirt affair With the oodles of power making up for the poor handling. I explained my thoughts to him over lunch (dog burger and chips). In the afternoon I returned the favour and tried to show him what I was getting at with my negative comments on the Escort by doing my upmost to give the 914 a good show with him sitting shotgun. His comments were along the lines of "fk me , you're nuts. If this little thing had more power it would be a contender."
The next year I decided to put the bigger engine in it but unfortunately life got in the way and I never got to rally it again with the more powerful motor it has in it now. Shame really. But then again I probably would have run out of talent quicker than I ran out of power.
