Timing chain sprocket alignment

As part of my '74 2.7 engine build I am at the stage of checking my timing chain sprocket alignment.
I am using the Dempsey book but not fully understanding the process as it seems to jump around.

The method I have used is as follows:

Fit spacers ( as per prior to rebuild - 4 each side )
Fit flange with woodruff key.
Fit new sprockets.
Fit washer and nut and handtighten.

I think the book suggests not fitting the woodruff key at this stage - does this make a difference?
Also am I supposed to fully torque up the nut before taking the measurements?

Using my technique the right sprocket looks spot on and the left is on the limit of the 0.25mm tolerance.

I am just looking for reassurance that this technique is fine as obviously I still have time to check and check again at this stage.

Finally as a point of note I hadn't appreciated that the camshaft shims are the same as the alternator shims.

Thanks in advance as always
Andrew

It's irrelevant whether you fit the woodruff key or not for this check - in fact it's best left out as you need to remove it to add/remove shims and every in/out is another opportunity for it to dive into the chain opening! - just don't forget to put it in later.
You need the sprocket to be in its running position so the cam nut needs to be tight, but there is no need to torque to final setting - just well 'nipped'.
