Replacing points with something modern!

Hi All,

I want to ditch the points on my 2.4T as maintaining them is a pain, and technology has moved on a little! I also want to remove another variable in the mystery of getting these engines to run properly

Has anyone replaced the points with a optical / magnetic trigger device in conjunction with the original CDI box? What did you use? Would you recommend it?

The Bosch CDI box is fine (I hope!) so I don't need to go down the route of a full MSD system or similar.

Any tips gratefully received :)

I had a look into this, you can get a Luminition Optronic system and driver that will drive the CDi I believe. But I intend to go distributorless, using a Ford EDIS-6 and a Megasquirt to run the mapping. I intend to do this, as a first step, before converting the fueling from Zeniths to Throttle bodies. Trigger is from a 32 tooth trigger wheel on the crank pulley. The porcshe ignition system is replaced entirely.

Once you get it all working Tim I'd be fascinated to see how it runs!

I was pondering the same thing, Gary: not really looked into it yet: mines a bit different of course, running MSD, but if I spot anything I'll post it here :) .
