911E vs 911S

Post by yoda »

Hi

I'm rather enjoying my 1971 911E at the moment - took it for a great blast this morning and found it comfortable for the slog to some decent roads and then entertaining on the B roads once there. Great all rounder and I could drive it all day (and have) without any issues.

It lacks the top end fizz that makes pressing on good fun and I was wondering if any owners here have had a LWB E and an S and whether they thought the S was really a lot better? I know there are many similarities but the engine is such a big part of the driving experience, especially when you get to some decent roads.

I was having bad thoughts about adding some money and swapping the E for an S or possibly dropping in an S+ spec engine ........

Am I mad or is it worth exploring do you think? I mainly use the car for longer drives / touring / B roads etc and rear seats are a must so rules out some options. I have tried later cars (SC, 3.2, 964, 993 etc) and they don't have the all around appeal of the pre 73 cars.

Thanks

I have a 2.2E and I love it. The engine has S spec Pistons S spec throttle bodies and heads but runs E cams and E stacks. It's dynoed on Bob Watsons dyne at 170 (new) and 190 after about 6000 miles. Goes well, not sure how it would compare to an S engine but I like it.

If you drive on open roads, usually without a passenger moaning at you and like to press on then an S spec motor adds that little bit of extra fizz and does feel quicker from a drivers perspective. Personally the charactor and feel of an S motor is worth the upgrade 8) .....Winding any early motor beyond 7000rpm is always fun. The character of an S IMHO feel more like that of an RS .... Although to be honest when we're all out on a Ddk drive , on the road you can't really say there is much in it between any of the cars ( e's , S's or RS's ) that are running from 170bhp - 220 bhp

Of course , if you're preparing to,commit some cash , possibly a 2.7Rs motor is financially a more sensible option as not only at the P&C cheaper but an RS spec motor will be easier to sell on in the future to anyone building an RS rep

Once, my 73T had a home built 2.4E engine with S P&B but kept the E cams (advice from Bob Watson), mech injection.
Major Dad now has that engine, but when in my T it was magic.

Changed that to a stock 3.2 on bosche etc, and that is a dream road touring combo in the 1000Kg T.

Thanks all for the helpful comments ...... and Uncle Vic!

The E is quick enough but as James has highlighted, it is the power delivery that is different plus there is some extra shove to go with it. The suggested S pistons and throttle bodies sounds appealing but then so does a 2.7 RS spec motor! The current engine is fine and I don't think it needs a rebuild any time soon so I have been keeping an eye out for a spare engine but nothing has stood out.

But doesn't have back seats. I often take the gang down to Cardiff in the E it and sneak off to the Black Mountains. Can't do that in the RS. You've had several Ss and an E - do you think it is worth the outlay to swap?

It has rather a lot of scaffolding in the back - could cut it out and re-do the interior but seems a shame as it's rather nice at is.

Sell both & buy an S. Or even a 74 Carrera with rear seats & get best of both worlds.

Yoda,
Take the cage out - you'll see a performance gain from the weight reduction!
For some time I've been running an E to S spec but with high comp pistons and 'intermediate' cams great performance for fast road and the odd hill climb. However currently being rebuilt with std S cams. Will post some notes on here when it's finished.

Hmmmm sorry had nt considered the rest of the family and they re growing !

i had 2,2.4 E s only 1, S , but 2 standard 2.7 rs s ....... i snuck the S out today in anticipation of salt any time !
In fairness the E always seemed the most sensible choice for day, to day driving especially around town, out on the open road no question the S on cam is wonderful , maybe i am lucky ,its a short 120 000 miler and never had engine out .......i m ready to be flamed for this but i don't feel its that much less exciting than the rs s
so back to original statement .....enjoy each for what they are ..........however recently helped a pal pass on a viper green replica car u know , had the pleasure of driving it around a bit ............proper 2.7 rs engine BUT with 2.8 barrels and pistons ,raising the compression .........obscenely quick ..........not sure where u would find parts for another !
