Once upon a time there was an excellent website showing Weber IDS/IDA carbs in all their glory. Each side and the top of the body was nicely photograped along with all the jets, emulsion tubes and other componants making it really easy to see what went where.

Sorry, I haven't got a copy of the pages but I do have an Edoardo Weber Service Manual for 40 IDA 3C carbs in pdf format. It's full of exploded drawings and rebuild procedures. Can email it if you like.

Thanks Chris, it's not so much for me, my 911 is long gone, I was just reading over old posts and saw the website had disappeared. It was a great resource that helped me immensley when I was up to my eyeballs in jets and floats. Shame it wasn't preserved here on DDk.

I hope your carbs are running well, here's wishing you clean fuel and lots of power.

It's a pity that site has gone. I think you directed me to it and it was big help. Car is running great now thanks. Ultrasonic bath, gallery cleaning, butterfly alignment, idle mixture screw twiddling and colortune (borrowed from mdmax72 ) seemed to do the trick. Also had a rolling road session with Peter Burgess (Ilkeston) which was money well spent. Did 730 miles during the DDK Spa trip and it didn't miss a beat.

Did you get your carbs highly tuned in the end using this info?
What did you replace that made the greatest improvement?

Well Mike, it was a steady old business getting my carbs to work nicely... and keep on working nicely. I had them rebuilt twice over the years, both times by proffesional outfits and each time there was an improvement but niether company got to the root of the problem.

Here they are soon after the second rebuild, all plated up and vapour blasted. Yum !



The enduring problem with these carbs was an intermittant but persistant miss on a couple of cylinders. Not so much a miss as such but a non firing, mostly number on 2, sometimes number 6 and occasionally number 2 and number 6.

Despite spending hundred of pounds on the little darlings, making sure they were absolutely to spec and within tolerance they still wouldn't behave. I even found hairline cracks in the magnesium manifold which I had welded up... all to no avail.

After working through the few possibilities left with Paul Abbot over on Pelican and with encouragement from Andy Hass here, I pulled all the lead plugs out of the carbs. I was daunted at the time but it's actally a pretty straight forward procedure and it allowed me to get to all the galleries with acetone and pipe cleaners. After soaking and poking for a couple of days I had a nice collection of black crud on the bench that was the fuel varnish and sediment that had built up over 40 odd years.

Popped it all back together and the car ran really quite nicely, better than it ever had in my tenure, really quite astonishing, running strongly on all six cylinders properly for the first time. Shortly after, I sold it. Bloody hell.

So to answer your question Mike, cleaning out those tiny internal fuel galleries was the secret of my success, that and Paul Abbott and his website. http://www.performanceoriented.com/ ( he's often on Pelican fielding questions from the likes of you and I ) and information gleaned here on DDk and yes I did get my carbs highly tuned... but that's a whole other story.

The lead plugs........... Now, just to complete my education, what number are those on the above diagram?

No numbers for the lead plugs I'm afraid Mike and what's worse there's loads of them.

Seven on this side, the bottom three are easy to see, they're the little grey circles at 8, 17 and 21. The other four block up the ends of the fuel galleries just below 4, 12 and 20



On the other side there are 4 on the IDA carbs and 7 on the IDS carbs. Can you spot them ?



Finally, there are three in the top of the body. From the photo I can't remember for the life of me which of those little grey circles are holes and which are lead plugs but it'll be pretty obvious when you get to that stage.



Oh and there are three lead plugs in the underside of the carb bodies but we don't have a photo for that so we're a bit stuck.
