So...

I'm taking the alternator out of the fan housing for refinishing and can't see how...

I've taken out the long screws and don't just want to hit it unless I know it's supposed to move. Any suggestions?

Also what is the correct finish for the fan and housing on a '72T? I don't want to incur the wrath of Mike if I get it wrong!

I think there is a wood ruff key in the centre. Mine still needed a fair old tap with a rubber mallet.

I have bead blasted my fan and applied several coats of Tectyl. It gives the fan the correct Yellow tint that was the original finish.

Went to see Bens finished 226mm fan housings last night. Gorgeous and vey tempting although finding it hard to justify (afford!) the cost......the housing and tectyl would finish my engine off nicely!

Morning, thanks for the information. The finish looks easier than I expected.

After a Google this morning I found a Pelican article and it seems that once I've taken the long screws out 'a few light taps' and then it should come out.

I'd already tried the light tap, so I guess it might be a heavier tap!

There should be studs and nuts, not screws. Undo the nuts, then press out carefully. The correct finish is chromate, available from a few specialists.

Here's a few images from a genuine 700 mile car. I think most of us were in our short trousers when this rolled out the factory.

Hi Gary, the alternator should come out with a few forceful taps.

Are you planning on getting your alternator refurbished? If so would be interested in what type it is and who you are thinking of using as I'm wondering the same myself.

Evening, A hammer upgrade sorted the removal One tap in fact!



Normally I use the club hammer first, but for some reason (must be all that fragile magnesium!) I went with the girly hammer.

I guess the correct cromate finish is clear not the grey I see quite a lot of these days? Google tells me either is possible.

Andrew, I'm only planning to clean the alternator up and change the brushes, not refurbish as such.

ah intresting, ive been wondering about the grey paint, i went silver a few years ago, definatly want the grey next time - thats a chromate?

Andrew for the alternator refurb, the guy i use is only £35ish (exact cost varies)! So just look someone up locally when you need to.
