What have I done now....

getting the rear window in a 911 coupe is one of the most difficult jobs, only the Targa is worse!

Press 'undo', then control, alt delete Ian: that should work . Still I'm sure you're encouraged by Nicks words of cheer .

Me and my brother did mine, and most unpleasant it was too: having said that, we just took our time, used a very strong, thin piece of cord for pulling the seal through, and were fairly firm in keeping the pressure up on the outside of the screen as you work round.

Was the idea just to get a new seal in, or is there any making good on the body first? Doesn't look too bad in the pics.

Gee thanks Nick - I put the new seal around the cleaned glass and honestly thought to myself that surely this is going to be a doddle. Then I come inside and read this .

The metalwork the seal seats against is in remarkably good shape - I just want to make the rear end watertight for now (the old seal was totally bu99ered) and as it's bound to rain during the Beaulieu weekend I needed to do it before then.

I literally vacuumed away the old felt and the rear bulkhead finish you see in the pictures is what was left. I know there are holes at both sides that a caring previous owner in the States treated to some fibreglass, but they are going to have to wait (along with the rusty seat pans) until I strip the car for it's respray.

If I can't fit it myself (with assistance from a neighbour who's fitted glass in the past), it'll be going down to RAC Windscreens next week. Perhaps I should just take it down there tomorrow and save myself the trouble, but then again I'll get more satisfaction (and no doubt mental scars) from having a go myself.

The trick is to put the top end in first - doesn't seem the right way to do it at first but after my (failed) attempts to do this job by starting at the bottom the insert at the top centre always popped out again & I got the above advice from a windscreen fitter. Works every time now...

Odd. My fitters always start at the bottom and work up. Everyone has there own knacks I suppose.

And now I'm frantically phoning around to get it fitted before Saturday as my fingers are knackered having tried to put the trim strip back in (dry) myself.

Only hope the pro's can fit it in tomorrow....

I recall the rear screen was one of the worst jobs when putting my 12 back together. Resorted to getting a screen fitter to do it - his words were similar to Nick's - if you think this is bad - do a targa!

Finger's crossed it all goes back together OK

Looks like you may need a weatherproof car for Beaulieu!

Eek Ian! I wish I was bit closer: would be happy to help, its just the odd 250 miles in the way. See what you meant by the screen seal though .
