DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

I realise Hedingham is the big draw this weekend, but I decided to go south instead. Seemed like a respectful call with the passing this week of the good Lord Montagu. It was rammed.



There was a one hour traffic queue on the signed route in, a long tramp from the car parks, and then a 20 minute queue to get in, so I was hoping it would live up to its name. And it did.



It's huge. Great atmosphere, and if you have the stamina, you can find pretty much anything. I picked up an original brochure for my 911. Loads of French, Dutch and German petrol heads around, some running stalls that give a real different flavour of collectables.



I've never seen so many boxes of stuff to rummage through.



And the prices. Battered unboxed Dinky toy 356A, £18. And this one:



As my young grandson ( 2 and a bit) is already seriously car obsessed (I wonder why?) I was taken with the pedal cars. This he would have loved.



But at this price I'm afraid he may have to wait a while.



And I might have to wait a while for this too. It was in the Bonhams sale. Coolest wheels of the day.



Great day out. My advice for next time is to book online advance tickets so you get in without too much queueing, and as ever follow the locals and not the "visitors" signs.

I was also there. Good , bad and ugly I thought .
For me the stars of the show were the toys for very rich boys.
This Bugatti was not far off half real size . It came without any drivetrain
and wasn't a pedal car. That didn't stop the French vendor asking £ 17,500









I got interested in this 1920's Alfa. Not home made but a 'known' toy and previously owned by a well known actor. It was a bit bigger than 1/18th in size, but the original paint
had gone and it had a newish hand paint finish. I lost interest at £3750 cash.







£ 14,750 for this very tired ( and rusty ) BMW seemed a trifle ambitious.





I was once told that this contraption would solve our traffic congestion ( as long as it didn't rain ) ----






Bargain of the day may well have been this. It had a few bubbles, a series one dash and needed a bit of TLC but that's not a lotta cash in today's market.

The uphill walk back to the car park after 5 hours on your feet is a bugger, but just about worth it.

Yes the microcar thing is still growing. I saw there was a nicely staged stall dedicated solely to the bubble car. I missed the E type though. It does appear to be fairly priced.

I must have parked in the same field as you, as it was a long uphill struggle. But such is the appeal of the event that I'd definitely return again, and give myself time to look around the museum too.

I think most of the parts I bought were from Dutch sellers.

Not sure that there are many bargains to be had but it is still an enjoyable day though.

Unmissable event IMHO, you need stallholders tickets and get in 8am Friday for bargains or rare and desireable stuff. 3 days of drinking, eating, selling and above all laughing! Not much Porsche hardware, but I wasn't looking for that, loads of cash happy euroguys though. And i put a face to a DDK name! Simon James. W
