Would definitly not buy a non matching car ? (ie 912) ?
if so, what would you recommand as a base of negociation ? (10, 15, 20 % price reduction ?, say from average Hagerty Valuation ?)

Start at 20% discount and drop the price from there! There aren't going to be many that are matching numbers left I would assume. Being the poorer, disposable cousin and all that...

I would think there were far more variables to value than numbers, colour, rust, original spec over wrong year or after market etc

I'm not sure about 20% and more. As stated above what if the engine was the correct type/year and just rebuilt by a marquee builder? I would be much more concerned about the condition of the car? Do you want to drive it or sell it (actually looking at your profile I guess sell it)?

Of course, my first attention would naturaly to look at the condition of the car. A PPI is ordered and I'll guess I'll get more information as the car is in Florida..Cant fly there... I have no intention yet to sell the car, as you see on my profile, I still have the 4 911 I bought since I sold my two 997.
And yes, I drive them alternatively, every day. It all depend on the weather, mood and journey...
The engine is 1996, the châssis 1967... hence... not matching...

It's getting difficult to buy a decent car in the US now.. long gone are the days I just sent over £10,000 and didn't bat an eye lid. But now I send money to the truck company to buy the guy or some one I know with in the 912 group. Or the best one the shipper direct and then when the seller turns up with the car they get paid!

Non matching numbers is it really a big issue... while the engine might not be the same one it left the factory with further inspection i bet 20% of the car is missing parts it left the factory with.. matching engine or not..

May be 10% at best and I mean the best.. may be in years to come the value will rise further and there is a demand for it all.. but like my Pre A .. I have a 3 pc case for the engine not a 2pc and the reason I have a blank 3 pc case is, the engine had a big!! bang and the internals are the original engine parts but the case which was damaged was replaced with a factory new no number case.. so if some one thinks they are going to get my Pre A for 20% less they can go look for another one.... good luck

I think matching numbers is for the investor market. Starting with 2.4S coupes and upwards.

If you plan to actually use your car you should more concerned with its condition, starting with the most expensive parts to repair. If someone has replaced the original engine with another then presumably it is in better condition than the one they took out..

Matching numbers = big premium.

Whether you agree with the fact it should or not doesn't matter. In reality it will.

A mint car matching numbers will easily be 20% more than a mint car non-matching numbers.

It's one of the first questions anyone asks now.

Unless someone is looking for a hot rod many buyers will simply pass over a non-matching numbers car.

I agree, I am new to Porsche but everyone told me go for matching numbers and where possible triple matching if nothing else to future proof the car's value.
Mine will be driven as they should (when we get it restored) but as a new buyer it did make a difference right or wrong
