Homemade Short Shift? Ive never seen this before

Im puzzled on this one.

its a 73 911T (915 gearbox). Typical bad shift. The gear and motor mounts are long past it, so I thought i would change them (poly) and change all the gear linkage bushes while im at. It also jumps out of 3rd, but i'll leave that to Mikey B to sort when the time comes.

Any ideas why some one would fit this ally spacer? The gear travel felt normal (i.e NOT short shift). The spacer forces the shift rod down about 10mm. I thought maybe the gear rod was upside down, but the allen key at the front is on the left, so its in right.

I dont know whether to knock the alloy block off,and reinstall it correctly, which is partially above the centre tunnel, or just leave it! All i can come up with is maybe the engine/gearbox mounts are past it (they are, they are getting changed) and this is to commpensate for the engine/gearbox sagging a little?

Dunno, enlighten me =)
