Hi All,
Apologies for my first post, but I have seen a 912 that is on a local garage forecourt. It is not strictly for sale, but the owner might let it go. He bought it with a collapsed rear suspension, engine not running well, bits tomtidy up, etc. he has done the suspension and engine. Rear seats stillmnees a full refurb. Probably some other bits too.
Targa roof looks ok, don't know mileage, year or number of clocks. He said it was a 2 year only run and that the engine was a 1,600 and similar to that in the VW.
I have an idea whAt he wants for it. What do the experts on here think. It is local to me in the UK, so transport isn't an issue.
Thanks,
Trevor
PS - my other motor is a 996 Turbo and I used to have a 964. Shame I sold it.

Main thing to check is Rust. A 912 body will cost the same to restore as a 911 . Do you have any photos you,can post without giving away its location ?
Couple of things to check ... First, make sure it's got a 912 Porsche motor and not had a vw motor fitted
Suspension collapsed .... Rare thing that really, so again check it wasn't a result of rust

Make sure the rear suspension doesn't have coilovers now fitted (a sign that the torsion tube might have rusted out & not been repaired).
As above, rust rust rust (or filler over rust so take a small magnet)

As replied on 912 bbs I think we need more info. Aside from the rust and condition. For example if this car has a vw engine and lots of non original bits then the price you have said is too much (just seen that James has beat me to it).
You have to remember that Targa's are generally cheaper than coupes (apart from soft windows). Partly because some misguide Porsche drivers believe that coupes are better! Partly because the roofs cost quite a bit to restore and if they have leaked there will be problems with the floor pans etc.
PS If you get a drive a soft window in the sun completely open a coupe is a poor brother

funnily enough, I'd put a 912 targa as more desirable than a coupe

Was there ever an IB 912E targa? Would explain the t4 VW fitted.
Just checked... seems there were a few US market 912E Targas produced in '76. Can't find a pic though...

My Dad said so. He's a policeman.

But that would be a 2.0l (914) type4 engine, not a "1600"?

True. Just thinking out loud over the VW origins...

Does it have VW origins? The original post stated the owner said it is a 1600 engine similar to a VW, this comment is true for the 912 engine, similar to a VW but not the same (with exception to maybe the Dynamo and fan)

Point.
As no model year is stated though, I was working on the fact that it was a 'two year only' model. That could be a '74/5 VW-powered 912E rather than an early '65/6/7/8/9 912. If the seller got his years wrong then he might be misinformed on his CCs too? I then couldn't recall any 912E Targas but it seems they were produced in the US in very limited numbers according to google.
Either way, I'd be happy to run an early 912 with a built VW motor.
Of course, this would be so much easier with some pics, VIN...

I was thinking that the swb/lwb split explains the 2yr only comment.
