UK registration of my '65 356C should (hopefully) be finalised next week so I'm keen to see other people's F&R no. plate set-ups.

If you have a T5 or T6 model & don't mind posting front &/or rear pictures showing your car's plates it would be useful in helping me decide on what size/shape & where best to position them.

I don't know at this stage what the actual registration number is but it's likely to be a 3-letter 3-digit C-suffix plate.

I'm only really interested in B & C models (with bumpers fitted) as the earlier models - with their lower bumpers - allow a greater number of options.

For information, my car's bumpers have the alloy GT trim with no overriders.

Hi - I don't want to burst you bubble but you do have to conform to DVLA regulations as to the size of the plates and the size and spacing of the numbers and letters, the one you've shown 6HLA is illegal - spacing between numbers and letters is wrong and the plate size too small - I can't tell is the character size is right or wrong? The issue if you don't follow the letter of the law (sorry for the pun!) is that you could face a fine if stopped albeit this isn't likely to happen.

I know about 'legalities' but have driven various cars for years with a smaller (motorbike size) front plate & just swapped it for a std-sized plate for the MOT test - never had any problems.

I'm more interested in seeing the shape (eg rectangular vs square) of people's rear plates & positioning (above/below/on bumper) of front plates ...

You are about a month ahead of me with the very same question. I also have been looking at the glorious Maxted-Page photo library, and can't help wanting to phone him up and ask the dimensions and whether the upper vent holes are blanked with black, photoshopped (seems very unlikely) or reflecting a shadow on the inboard edge of the indicator bases? ( and telling him again that i want the 'Ted Wooley' car....)
My number is 6 digits, 3 letters and 3 numbers, and i have no intention of abiding by the law if it doesn't look the way i want it to!! Also who makes stick on number plates. Perhaps we need the skills of a good photoshopper bercause i can't put stripes out of my mind too...........

Old pics now. My approach... rear plate was on a powdercoated backplate with cut down popes nose, striped by Watts to match the glovebox.
Front was a micro bike plate, rivetted to a pair of used luggage straps wrapped around the bumper with double sided tabs to stop it slipping 'at speed'.

I remembered your solution but didn't remember that you had a different number on the front & rear ! ...

Tee hee... I retouched the front plate when I posted pics on the samba. Dodgy bunch over there...

Now i am getting distracted, is that GT horn grill pukka and correct? The indicator appears to be sunken. Is that an oil cooler behind? W

I will be moving the proper Number plate to where the 356BT6 plate is as I think its better at the bottom.

Lightweight did you ever get the plate onto the car.

I have a 356C, I am considering placing a small plate in exactly the same position shown in the initial picture.

I have 3 letters and 3 numbers.

If someone has something like this configuration on the front could they post a picture and measurements of the plate and digits.

Really need to see the car but chances are Front: Motorcycle size below bumper oblong. Rear: Normal size in normal position oblong.
Good thread, and a critical detail to get right!

I think mine are a bit marmite on a B. I like them but they've definitely split opinion largely due to the size of the rear plate.

Nice car, the rear number plate shape is different to the oblong I am considering.

How did you mount the rear plate, did you use the standard bracket that is sold by vendors, it makes the plate sit about 20mm of the rear of the car. These are a good option rather than mounting directly onto the car body. However require 2 small holes to be drilled.

I am going through the figures at the moment seeing how small I could possibly get away with without it becoming too noticeable.

The letters and numbers legally have to be 3 1/8.
