DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

So a number of years ago I came across a second hand Bursch extractor set up on ebay that seemed too good to pass up. However on fitting I started to question whether it was the genuine article since:

• The header is terminated in a 3 bolt flange and came with a muffler fitted yet neither the header nor the muffler carries any manufacturer's stamp
• People rave about the fit being so good and I found I had to bend/adjust the gap between the heat exchanger interface and flanges for cylinders 2 and 4 on my car to get it to fit
• Even after said massaging the tail pipe exit is way too low and there's no chromed tip
• Performance wise I've not noticed a difference
• Audibly it doesn't sound as throaty as the stock item it replaced

All in all I'm thinking of going back to stock but I'd be keen to hear from anyone who can comment on a)Whether copies of the Bursch system lurk in the marketplace and b)Notwithstanding Willhoit's thoroughly documented experiments with a highly modified engine are there any dyno results out there for a comparison with a stock exhaust on stock or milder applications? Obviously if I'm running a cheap copy then I can't expect the full benefit but I do wonder if it is worth another go with the genuine article if that's the case.

Finally if I do refit the stock item it has quite a bit of surface rust that I'd like to clean up for maximum longevity (they aren't cheap!), can anyone recommend a cost effective coating solution?

I once heard from a highly reliable source that stock is best...especially if your engine is stock, or even if mildly modified to 1720 etc.

I think Ceramic coating would give best results, but you could also try cleaning it up with a wire brush and repainting with high temp exhaust paint.

Its a 1720 with a Neutek SX-1 cam. I am leaning heavily towards putting the stock unit back on as soon as I have cleaned it up, I can find plenty of powder coaters local to me but no one that offers ceramic coatings so its looking like a wire brush and some VHT paint from Frosts will have to do (price will undoubtedly get out of hand if I have to courier it anywhere).

I like the look of your twin pipes but my rear valance is new after an insurance job following some bint driving into the back of me whilst I was queueing at some traffic lights, I'm not brave enough to cut a hole in the new panel But I did keep the old battered one!

There's a good fabricator of stainless exhausts near me in St Albans who seem to build stuff exactly to fit for less than off the shelf prices (I've had bits made for bikes by them) so I may go visit them for a quote on a stainless copy of the stock item or enquire about having a mockup of something similar to the Sebring made, I've always like the sound they make. Not sure if carbs would need re-jetting to suit one though.
