thought i'd take it out for a jolly around the leicestershire countryside while the sun is out. but i can't get it to start.

i think the connection to the starter motor has come loose again but im not able to fix it





i really need to do a blondies course to maintaining a 912.. anyone know a good teacher??

Have you tried sticking a charger on the battery for a while.... It gave mine the boost it needed to spin over like a top once more. May be worth a try.

Also maybe worth sticking your head under the dash to make sure one of the wires hasn't popped loose?

battreys brand new and yes it is fully charged.

i know whats wrong im just too girlie to fix it. scared i might make things worse by doing/touching the wrong thing.

Helen, dive under the car & give the wires to the starter motor a wiggle. If nothing seems loose tap the big bit of the starter motor a couple of times with a small hammer & then see if it'll start.. If that doesn't work make sure it's out of gear & the ignition is off, try shorting the big wire on the starter solenoid across the little wire on the starter solenoid with a long screw driver, it may well spark a bit & make you jump. This should make the starter spin. If it does go back up top & try the key...

whats a starter motor look like?

i really wish i was kidding here. i bought the car with the idea of learning all this but Larrys enjoying it so much he won't let me near it and i admit i have encouraged him to do this.
im very willing to learn but,Larry is the worst teacher in the world.

Don't feel disheartened it's not true that boys are genetically able to recognise car bits

The starter motor is bolted to the back end (back is back, as you sit in the car - the engine end in your 912) of the gearbox, up high on the right hand side/offside (right is right as you sit in the car).
The gearbox is the big metal lump attached to the road wheels by a couple of (drive)shafts, the starter is above and slightly behind the offside drive shaft. The engine is the big metal lump behind the gearbox.

Think yourself lucky, imagine trying to diagnose & fix a Cayenne... we'd need a ladder just to reach the underside of the drive-train.

somehow i can't see the Cayenne lasting 38 years either
