DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Well this probably doesn't strictly belong here, but there is plenty of IB interest on DDK, and its my local..so this is probably as good a place as any to document the bits of work I am doing to this car.

This is the Green 1979 Targa that I picked up from the Netherlands, story here.

She was delivered new to Otto Glockler VW-Porsche-Sportwagenzentrum Frankfurt on 06/07/79 to Frau Karrin Cobernuss, before being exported to Mark Andrako in Ben Lomond California in '84, then on to Richard Kemptner of Manteca California, until 2014, and then repatriated to Europe by dealers near Amsterdam. From there, she was driven by two, err, enthusiasts to Fife Scotland...about 70 miles from the REAL Ben Lomond.

I thought it was worth a quick google maps using the Manteca address on the certificate of title, and sho' nuff, here she is, bathing in the valley sunshine. Nice to see..





and then at the end of her journey to her new adoptive home in Scotland..



She is properly rust free underneath, just amazing to see all the brackets and fixings like they left the showroom - the exchange for this being that everything on the top and inside is parched - so all original paint but sunburned laquer and cracked dusty plastic and vinyl. The plan is to get her MOTd and registered and then a gentle return to as-delivered where possible. It should be an enjoyable resto/tidy up that doesn't take over my already full week, with a car that will still be scruffy for a while, but perfect for cruising about in the summer with the roof off. I don't want to make it into a fire-breather - the 964 is my hotrod really - I want this car to be chilled out, with a beech gear knob, cocoa mats and beads on the mirror

I have a bad photocopy of the registration documents and a stamp in the German owners manual, but I ordered a letter of origin from Porsche so that I wouldn't be messed about by the DVLA. So, they sent a Certificate of Authenticity (good ol Porsche LOL), but pending some emails I presume that I get to keep that, while they send me actually what I requested. More delay but a freebie from Porsche UK at least..

Talking of which, the CoA tells me that optional equipment was Radio Porsche CR Stereo, Rear Fog Light, Electric Antenna, Chrome Parts in Black and Coloured Windows. No mention of Sport Spec or high brake light, and so I presume she came with cookies and that the spoilers and snorkel brake light they were later additions (although the brake light has a Porsche p/n) - which means that I felt OK taking the spoiler and brake light off as job no.1

5 easy nuts (and one little fecker that took all evening) later..



Goodbye 9kg give or take..it felt heavier, let me tell you.



Got a cheap ebay boot badge to play around with whether I want it silver or black - it should be black, but I prefer silver. Ack! the originality is slipping already.



Happily the tail already has the holes for the badge - another sign that the spoiler came later..



Trial fit..



and then to see whether I can pretty the tail up to be passable from 10 yards..welding the holes and repainting is for another time, so its is going to be rubber grommets for now I'm afraid.

Jason, there was nothing in the smugglers box, despite it being ex california and then Amsterdam. What a let-down..

Nope, still waiting for the correct windscreen to arrive so I can MOT it. Drums fingers..

The old screen cracked when the car rolled off the ferry (dropping the mirror on the floor), and the crack grew, and grew, and grew..

So, time to carefully remove the aluminium trim and then chip away the cracked graphite-like stuff that was once a rubber seal, back in the day..

The tiniest bit of corrosion..there is always something under 'screen rubbers it seems, but I have caught this way in time.


And finally, off to auto glass with my bike in the back..wish me luck!

Windscreen sorted. And they have done a right good job, nice snug seal, no extra sealants or other crap used, no scratches to my nice new black deco trim, did it in the evening that the 'screen arrived..big up to Dundee Autoglass





Although..a heart sink moment when the (worn smooth) key wouldn't turn the ignition, when I tried to drive off..scurried home on my bike to get the key blank I got from Pelican, only for timpsons to tell me its the wrong blank and refusing to cut it..so, plan B, wd40 into the ignition barrel and heat the key with a propane torch (!)..which worked, thank the Gods. So, she's back at home ready for fettling for MOT. Can't wait..

The 964 needs a fuel line and a big service, so thats 2 projects going at once. Good job I have loads of spare time

911's from '79, '89 and '99..

Cracked dash fix..

Bought a dash cap from a german supplier on ebay, about 90 quid. Even though the screen was out I couldn't face restoring the original dash.

The usual cracks



Trial fit - actually very close fit already, no trimming needed.



Sanded down the high spots and degreased, some silicone glue around the edges (supplied with the dash) and some heavy things on top overnight..



Sorted. A very quick and satisfying fix!

Well, it was all going so well. Probably too well..until:

Bugger! Just the one?

Yes as far as I can tell, uppers are hard to see but they don't tend to break as I understand it. This is the rearmost LHS lower stud, no1 cylinder.

I know I shouldn't drive it...and yet how long has it been broken? The car goes great, as they say, but I have been researching the damage that can be done if the head is loose..>horse noise<

I had a 3.0SC brought into the workshop six months ago with Eight lower studs broken, all six on one side, two on the other, the car was still being used, although it did sound a bit like a steam train!
