My 67 motor is missing its manifolds and carbs.

Engine builder mentioned that Decades would be a good replacement.

Anyone running these or has any experience of them?

Just after some advice

or if you have some manifolds and carbs in good order please let me know.

Engine with builder now so need to get on with sourcing the missing bits.

The correct carbs for your 912 are solex 40 pII, if you can track a set of these down they are probably your best bet, alternatively weber 40 idfs will do the job just fine as will dellorto drlas. Never heard of decade carbs, but they look like a weber idf copy (maybe a Chinese copy?) As long as the build quality is upto standard they will probably be ok.

Get to gripps with the concept that - whatever you buy (Used Solex`s or New Weber / Decades) will NOT work straight out of the box

You are going to have to make them work

In addition, if you have fitted a new cam - it needs breaking-in for 20/30 mins at 2,500 rpm
Bloody difficult when you may (?) have carbs that do not want to work

It is nothing to do with Money

1) - The manufacturers do not know what vehicle the carbs are going to be fitted to
2) - The manufacturers do not know what sort of engine has been put together (Capacity, Compression, Cam etc etc)

So how do they know how to jet them ?

In all probability they will assume that it is a VW Type 1 Motor and go with that - but it is only a starting point

What you need when you are firing up a motor for the first time is a pair of carbs that are not going to spit, fart and flood
At the very least you need them to be able to hold a steady 2,500 rpm for 20 minutes or so to break in the cam

When that is done you can play to your hearts content

Well this is a debate that will continue on and on. I don't wish to speak for Mike Smith but I believe I'm right in saying he loves solex carbs and has worked on many, many 616 engines (this last bit I can say with confidence). However, others love weber http://maestroslibrary.com/bug_carb.html. I would restrict your list to solex, weber, zenith. Why add another unknown into the mix?

If you go for Dellorto DRLA 36’s Eurocarb actually give the basic jetting and emulsion tubes/chokes to use.
That would be for a standard engine, obviously if you’ve changed the CC or cam then those will differ somewhat

You don't need a pair of carbs for running up a motor to break in the cam. We use a single carb & fabricated manifold set up just for this purpose. Any size VW solex or weber downdraught carb will do as the engine will not be under any load. Its more important that you don't have any air leaks and as Mike says you can control the engines speed.
