It certainly has a wonderful atmosphere. We've been several times, and over the years it has of course become increasingly popular. I'd advise booking seats in one of the limited stands, as it's pretty difficult to get good views of the actual races as its a very tight street circuit. You used to be able to get close to the wires and barriers but now crowds (largely ex pats) seem to park their deckchairs in rows several deep, and then stand up when the races begin. If you want to be in the thick of it all, and have secure parking, then the Hotel Mercure is bang on the spot. (Everywhere gets very crowded). Or you can stay outside the town somewhere beautiful, (like Cognac) and motor in for the event. Well worth going.

It's a great event. I've been going there for the past 5 years. Twice in my 912. I travel down on the Thursday Newhaven Dieppe and drive all the back roads with my Dads crew of MG's some Pre war. Stop just north of LeMans and then the rest of journey on Friday . Never hit a motorway expect the last 20 miles dual carriageway. You buy a wrist band for about 20€ which gets you in the pits and main areas or as someone else mentioned you can pre book seats. I did post some pictures a few years ago..

Bring sunscreen ! It does get into the eighties!

It's amazing how the locals bring out all their classics and cruise about anything from convertible DS's to vintage motorbikes. You can sit the main square and watch with a beer.

I normally stay in Angouleme Nord area there's 3 hotels all on top of each other about 5km outside the city

What's the format? Different class races or one big race? How many days? Complete Paddock access?

Mike

Been twice over the last decade.
It is brilliant, fast and tight and very hot!
Lots of people last time , about 6 years ago, but I think things are better now.
We found it tricky to find places to eat with a large party of people, ie over 4 or 6.

Stopped going due to the crowds, and took up SPA instead as the Euro trip.

Well worth doing though and make your own minds up.

We stayed outside of the town by some way, parked at the train station.. Parking can be hard unless you get in early. It is a fair run down from Calais, we don't do ferries anymore.

There are different class races Mike. Practice Saturday, racing Sunday. Having paid entry it's open access to the paddock. There's a big "rally" on the Saturday morning, which is really just an excuse for a lovely slow trip in the French countryside with boozy lunch. Loads of people line the streets and villages to watch all the cars go by. They publish the route the day before, so every French car club in the country, and others from all over Europe join in. Very processional then, but a real experience.

Every year they have manufacture theme/race . Last year was the Renault Alpine. I think it was the biggest ever displayed .the year before was Porsche 911 with a display of one from every year . They race anything from type 35 Bugatti's to group 2 rally cars . And they do race ! I've seen the Bugatti's push and slide about. What's nice is there is no replicas . Quite a few 911's & 916's race all pre 72.

Practice and racing is only on Sunday . Very long day .. The last race is something like the 'Race of champions . First 3 places of every race have it out to claim the title .

It's been going for 75 years
