Thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Ben. You might recognise the user name from VZi etc...

I don't own a Porsche, as much as I'd love to. I do however own an aircooled flat 6 in the form of a 1964, 110hp Chevy Corvair engine, which has been stuffed into the rear of my buggy.....









The buggy was built by me and finished in June 2013. The engine was rebuilt from a filthy, frozen long block in early 2014 and finially fitted and running in the buggy in the summer. Its a lot of fun to drive..

The reason for me joining is that im just starting to replace all the dash with some early 911 & 912 green faced gauges (911 tach, 912 speedo and combined fuel/oil temp gauge). Got a couple of questions and issues But ill ask about those in the right place.

Yeah, it is fun. Awesome for wafting around in the sun.....pretty fast when you want it to be.

Getting a new gearbox soon too. Longer legs so should be better on motorways and long distance stuff. Toyed with the idea of a 901 box but it's a lot of work and cost to fit one to a VW chassis

Hello really nice buggy, is it a GP? I built a Fibre Fab Rat in the early 80,s in a very similar colour "Notts Forest Green" metal flake in the gel coat. Chose the colour in the pub as the foil on the Holsten Pils bottle looked cool. VW Type 3 engine, 1650cc, twin webbers, lightened and balanced built by Kingfisher Kustoms (they had a Corvair there at the time) Asked them to build me an engine that would burn off an XR3 (i hated them) Went like stink.

The Shell is a sidewinder. Its basically a modified Manx. Only real difference is the rear arches and the opening over the engine bay. The dash should be different too but I spec'd a Manx dash.

To be honest, when really given some, its brutal. It will lift the front end if really given some in first and generally, its very quick. In anything other than bone dry road conditions though, its lethal. Wants to go sideways at every available opportunity but that will be down to the 160+ lb/ft of torque (not had it in a rolling road yet to be sure) that's all bottom end in a 550kg fibre glass buggy. That's despite running 295 width tyres on the rear!!!

The colour is Lime Green. East Coast Buggies have only ever made 2 shells in this colour and its amazing. I couldn't choose between green and blue but having spoken to Rob at East Coast when ordering, he persuaded me to go for the green......a decision I've never regretted. It sparkles like a 70's disco ball in the sun !

Looks like great fun !! - always fancied building a Corvair-engined Buggy but never got round to it.
