hello and another new project

Hi, I've been reading the forum for a few months while researching buying my 911, but now it's time to start posting some questions, I have lots!

First off here's what I have bought.
It's a 1969 LHD car which I found advertised in Belgium. At some stage it was converted to impact bumbers, whale tail ect, and also the interior completely replaced. In fact so much of the car has been replaced, including the engine, that it's difficult to say what is actually original apart from the chassis number, which is a real shame because it is\was a 911S. Chassis no. 119300442. Originally a German car it was brought into Belgium 1999, by the stage the conversion had already been done and a 'restoration' job in the loosest sense of the word. Hopefully it's not the front end of and s and the back of something else, but time will tell as she gives up her secrets.

It's a running and driving car, which hopefully I can get through an MOT to get it registered so I can drive it. In fact i wanted to drive it home but in Belgium the number plates relate to the owner and his insurance, so he had to take the plates off when I bought it, hence the trailer.
The engine is an un-numbered 2.7 with a 7R case. That's all I know and I think the gearbox is probably a 915 as there's no dogleg??
The body work looks OK from a distance, but when you get close there is quite a lot of filler and dodgy panel gaps. There's no bad rust that I have found, but underneath is an ocean of black sealer which could be and probably is hiding some.
I don't really have a masterplan for the car, other than I very much doubt I will do a full originality restore on it. I do want to put it back to early looks and lose the spoiler, at this stage I don't know what the original colour was, pretty sure it wasn't silver.

So, first question is. To get through the MOT do I need to change to RHD headlights and is that just a case of buying new lenses, or complete headlamp units?

Second questions is, what injection system do I have on the engine, I don't recognise this as one of the early ones?
Third question, what 'S' bits should I look for. Apart from the VIN, the only feature I have found is the right front wheel mounted oil cooler.

Let me know what you guys think of the car and what I should do with it.
Whatever I do it will be a long term project, not going to rush into a massive rebuild straight away. It's been a while since I owned a 911 and seeing as this one is roadworth I'd like to use it a bit and not just take it straight off the road.

cheers
Tim

p.s. I live in South Hampshire not far from Goodwood, so the plan is to join the road racing club and do some track days\meets there with it.

Hi Tim, you'll love this helpful forum in organising what you do with your car and what it comprises, as a starter;

That's a CIS inlection system, the oil tank is earlier as is all the filter mounting gubbins. Late dash, G series type seats, looks like a 915 shift tower gaiter.

Hot Rod Project ....!!

You might get luckily and not have to change them! I didn't have to do with my 356 but I think the lights point directly forward on my car. I'm going to guess if you do then you will only need to change the lenses.

Since you live down that way it might be worth dropping into Alan at Cranford (he is on here) for a chat they have done lots of these. Even if you plan to do the work yourself lots of people like Alan will be willing to point you in the right direction.

PS Welcome and good luck

Can't help with your main questions, but the work involved in 'backforwardbackdating' it will vary according to how thoroughly they did the previous work. Do you have any pics inside the bonnet - specifically of the slam panel

And as Andy says - Hot Rod! - but I'm biased.

Welcome to the forum Tim, fingers crossed your car will turn out better than expected.

If you want to know if you do have an early shell check to see if there are actually flutes behind the centre dash vents. The car obviously has a later interior although I very much doubt if someone would have fabricated the metalwork behind those vents when forward dating an older car.

Most of all enjoy what you have and hope it drives well.

Cheers,

Looks like it may have the 2.0 litre oil cooler pipes in the engine bay, (should have in the sill oil lines) also looks like a 2.0 litre rear cross member as well.

If you have a look under the front offside wing you should have an oil cooler behind the head light bowl, the cooler should be a matrix type.

Good luck with the resto.

Yes the original matrix style front oil cooler is there, there is also an extra one mounted under the spoiler in the engine lid....
Here's a picture under the bonnet and of the slam panel, sorry about the quality, need to sort out the lighting in my garage!

Hi and welcome.

I think you will have to change the whole headlight units to be sure of passing an mot. The lenses alone might not do it I'm afraid.

Its probably going to be easier to climb Everest rather than getting anywhere near an original 69S (if it proves to be that model originally) from your photos of the car. The 69 model is unique in the early 911 line up and parts are therefore rare and in the S they are now VERY expensive. The list of unique parts to a 69 is as long as the climb to the aforementioned summit. You have a model which is amongst the hardest to get 'correct'.

I think I would satisfy yourself with getting your car running well and enjoy as is.

In the meantime this thread may be useful to make up your mind and check exactly what you have.
Good luck and enjoy Ddk.

Ps

I do you an injustice,
There is perhaps one other model (unique?) which is even harder to get 'correct' than your 69S. A very interesting 69E comes to mind.
but that's another story.

So you can with approved type. I learn something new every day. I thought they were only temporary.
Good to know James for future mots.

Thanks for the info, wow I didn't realise 69 was such a unique year, I guess it's in part due to it being the first LWB model year.
Hot rod it is then, to be honest that's what I wanted to do anyway.
MOT booked for saturday, so we'll see how we go.

That has got an identity crisis hasn't it. The shell certainly looks more SC that anything else. Later centre dash vents, SC/later arches, SC/later battery tray arrangement, bonnet latch panel.

The cooler under the engine lid is possibly the remains of an a/c condenser?

Don't junk those periscope washer jet nozzles as the're worth a bob or two.

Looks like a great project.

Is there any other way to find out what paint code a car originally was other than the plate by the door hinges (which is missing) or a COA?

The inside of the smugglers box has an 'interesting' metallic green\blue colour that doesn't strike me as an original porsche colour, but I guess it could have been one of the special order paints.

I don't really want to pay for a COA seeing as the engine and gearbox are definately not original, doesn't seem much point.

thanks
Tim
