DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Thanks to 911-356 dave I am now the proud owner of a 1966 UK RHD outlaw 912! Dave is a top bloke being very patient on the sale as I was in Singapore until the end of last week.

The car is great, not without a few jobs to do but I'm cuffed with it. I made the journey up North to 'do the deal' yesterday and drove 180 miles back and she didn't skip a beat. Got loads of thumbs up too! Best of all the newly rebuilt engine didn't drip a drop of oil. Keeping under 3500 rpm all the way was a challenge but it kept me the right side of 70mph, just.

I don't have any immediate plans, I've been big into the VW scene since I sold my 356 a few years back, (even took a best of show at the weekend with my notchback), so I'm just going to let the Porsche blood back into my veins and learn more about the 912 before making the car mine. For now Dave has done a great job and I'm proud to cruise it as is for the summer.

I'm wondering if there is somewhere I can download a scanned owners manual - there's a few knobs and buttons I'm unsure of

Liking the look of that, nice to see Gasburners for a change

( Personally I would go for a cleaner look and remove the extra lights upfront.....maybe lower it abit too ? )

Thanks Chris - I've spent a lot of time looking at your resto thread, brilliant stuff!

Lowering is definitely on the cards, this was one of the few things left on Dave's list to do. I'm not sure on lights and a few other items but want to give it a chance and see how it grows on me.

According to my COA the car came supplied to AFN London with;

Slate Grey
Brown Leatherette
Right Hand Drive, Loud Speaker, Exterior Thermometer, Clock, Key Signal

Does anybody know what 'Key Signal' might be?

I've finally got around to sending the car off to Max for a rework of the suspension and a service.



Can't wait to get it back now and see how it looks without the gap between tyre and arch! The engine sounds so sweet Dave's done a really good job on the car.

The car's now back and on the road thanks to Max. There was a lot of work on the bits you never see but it's a lot better car now for it.





The back end is down but the front is on the stops and won't go down further - are there options as I think it needs to come down at least an inch more to lose that gap at the front? - I'm looking at an R type stance.

I'm also debating now on side script and lights and I need to find a couple of days to do a full detail when extensions and work allows.

I think given its an original UK RHD 66 it might be worth restoring to Og in the long run so I'll be looking into collecting the relevant parts (which is a lot) although this could take some years to do, for now it's an Outlaw and proud to be so, so the immediate parts list is;

Torsion hole covers
Rear lock mechanism (the rubber catch thing doesn't do it for me)
Wheel caps

Driving wise I'm thinking of converting to Webers from the Solex's but need to do some research on that and see how it goes with some miles on the current set up. It's definitely a quick car but needs a lot of revs and has a very long first second and third gear so I'm driving with third as basically 4th gear - it's a 4 speed so I understand this is about right still may need to look at the hearing in future to make it a nice street car.

Happy to hear any thoughts and ideas anyone has.

5 speed will make a nice difference to be honest I sold my 5 speed box, perhaps I shouldn't have ( was spare at the time )

Nice car btw. I wouldn't be in a rush to swap the Solex's out to be honest..

you may be better in my view to have the Solex's rebuilt properly. If they have not already..

See 912's are not all that bad.. I must use mine more. Funny complete suspension update is where I am at, at the moment. But been distracted by it's bigger water cooled brother with the roof down.. :-/

Regards my 12, Max at Revival has rebuilt the carbs and he's told me they are worn beyond repair now so I'm inclined to think they're probably US.

In other news though...

I've found out the car is actually fitted with a 5 speed box! I thought it had a long first - I was told it was a four speed when I bought it (although technically I wasn't told anything and I didn't ask as it said four speed in the ad), I've only driven it about 500 miles or so and never found or thought to dogleg first! What a pillock I am! I thought I should double check and I found this;



This means it's a 5 speed according to the 912 registry. I then checked the serial number against the COA and it is the original matching numbers gearbox - result

I've been busy getting started on detailing now, starting with a compound polish working up to waxing. The results are looking good so far.
