DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Hi!

Having been heavily into my cars over the years and having various new Porches, Astons, Maseratis and Ferraris, I now find myself at a point in my life were I want to buy classic cars! Must be a mid life crisis! or perhaps I have just finally grown up! I recently bought a Lamborghini Countach Anniversary edition and and also looking for an early 911! They are truly one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

My shopping list is quite exact though! I am looking for a 1973 (my birth year) 911 E or S, RHD vehicle, preferably in Tangerine. Must be low mileage, matching engine / chassis numbers and in relatively good condition. Being a newby to all this I have been trawling the web pages and its certainly harder than I expected!

If anybody could point me in the direction of the right people to speak to who really know there stuff, or a potential vehicle that would match what I am after then that would be greatly appreciated!

you've set yourself a challenge there

Personally I'd say ignore mileage as it has no relevance on these cars ( unless ultra low ) and buy on condition & provinance alone ( have I spelt that right ? ).

RHD ? most people on DDK know my preference in an aircooled 911 and its LHD

To find a decent car , you've found the best place . Ask questions, put up wanted adds & go & see other DDK'ers cars to get an idea on what to look for

Good luck with your search. Can I ask how you're intending to use the car? High days and holidays, regular use, track use, spirited driving or pootling around?

These cars get under your skin when you start driving them harder.

S projects are few & far

Good running usuable 2.4E's , but still needing restoring at some point , can still be found for £40K +

Based on your car history I'm guessing you won't mind paying for the right car. If you look on wwwclassicdriver.com at the stock of a German dealer Early911S you will find a nice looking tangerine 2.4s with oil flap. It's a LHD but if you need something more practical you could always take the Countach. Look forward to seeing what you buy. Ant

RHD cars are very few and far between so good luck with your search; you may have to be patient....

I'm not sure how long you have been lurking but this was available until very recently (a '72 but will give indication of value):

It didn't sell privately and ended up with a dealer who sold it within days (it was a very nice car).

I would try and view all cars that crop up asap and be ready to move if you like what you see (after engaging the services of a specialist, of course) as good cars are being snaffled swiftly.

Granted there'll be duties payable but car looks a steal (probably as it's of the more common LHD variety ).

Only going on £'s that cars have sold for recently.

Konradsheim car would be £150k then as full vat needs paying from Swiss ... Surprised to find him selling cheap in the market, usually his prices are strong

He's realised the market has peaked and now retracting!

I know of exactly such a Rhd 73 2.4s coming out of a meticulous resto, in tangerine. I'll liaise with the owner and forward details if you're interested.

Thanks for all the feedback!

The more I look into it the more it becomes apparent that I am going to struggle to pick up a RHD 911S for under £175k and I just cant bring myself to pay that kind of money for a car that was quite heavily produced, no matter how beautiful it is!

The Blood Orange E would have been the perfect car, gutted that I missed it.

Has anyone seen this car? I appreciate its not got matching numbers, but on the face of it looks good value? Also with it not being matching numbers I would have less concern with having it resprayed the colour I want.

the Signal yellow 911T. I am put off by the fact it is LHD and a T. Any thoughts out there?

Sorry for so many questions, I need my hand holding through this process as I know there are a lot of easy mistakes to be made and I would rather avoid making them and buying the wroing vehicle.

No duty to be paid for any car bought in the EU. From the US its 5% for any car more than 30 years old 'of historical significance' - which in practise appears to mean anything over 30 years.

Many people, me included, prefer lhd cars. The pedal position is much nicer and you don't have any odd rhd production frigs. As a 911 is small, and has narrow pillars, visibility isn't really a problem. I only struggle behind a bus in traffic, or in the occasional car park that needs a ticket taken from a machine.

In case it helps we are restoring a RHD 1972 911E which will be for sale. The shell is now built and we are at the interior stage. All parts restored, rebuilt etc.



Full matching numbered car, original colour signal yellow, fully restored.
