I'd like to say Hi,
Ive been watching and reading all the great info for a few months, there really is some top notch petrol heads on here, which is very handy as otherwise it would be all about the US of A on the WWW.
I am North London based.
My Porsche, 1968 911L. purchased and driven back from Greece.
Current projects;-
The car came with 2 engines.
1. DIY Rebuild the 1973 7R engine case into a 2.7 twinspark with the help (full works) of Nick Fulljames at RedTek, He's a lovely bloke.
2. I have shelved the 1968 S engine case, as it has a con-rod smashed through the side. crank, is scrap, Cam shafts are good, I was told at purchase that this engine was in the car from new in the US and that it was a race car.
I applied for a Cardex however received a certificate of authenticity which documented an L engine only (no longer with the car). there is no record of the car in the "motorsport devision"
I can only guess that the owner intended to race the car as a privateer in club racing maybe. The 911S as I understand it, was out lawed in America due to emissions in 68. the engine number is very close the the chassis number both in low the 300's. I am lead to believe getting an L with its S type running gear and fitting an S engine was what you did to get a new race car in 68?????? I am very happy for feedback here.
3. Rebuilding it's 1971, 914/6 (901) gearbox, Yes I know weired right, I'm using new syncro's from the local Porsche dealer! I think thats amazing, the parts guy said that they make a loss on the parts, to keep them in stock for the 911 legacy, nice to know the newer Porsche owners are helping us out.
It turnes out to have a Quaife LSD, and close to nurburg ratio's. Fifth completely sheared its splines. I think this may have been the point of failure due the the engine lockup? emagine that at top speed! One of the cylinder heads was smashed completely in half. Nick Fulljames has kept this in his cabinet at redtek, "offerings to the god of speed!" he announced.
It is Silver, but was Irish green. and its a bit shabby.
Its a great car to start with, my first Porsche, first sports car actually, I feel very very lucky.
i'm going for a Magnus Walker type build as the car has many non standard parts already. I owe it to him as he pushed my over the edge to start the long held dream.
