930 Backdate

About time I put up a few details of my own project, though don't expect Ferryman type daily updates as progress has been very slow.

Last year I bought an '86 911 Turbo on ebay with a blown turbo or at least that's what the seller had assumed. I didn't have any specific plans for it when I bought it, but it was cheap (for a turbo).

Upon getting it home and stripping down the induction system it turned out that the blown turbo was actually nothing more than a blown seal, so that was a result.

So what to do with the car...

Well as nice as it might look it had 100k on the clock and no service history so was never going to be a top notch car, it also had the usual rot in the kidney bowls and bumper mounts so whatever I did with it was going to require a strip down...

So I stripped it down but got a little carried away

Agreed. Also a distinct lack of photos, Porsche packaging with shiny new parts and shock prices.

I'm sure I'll be able to include all of the above before the thread is over! Will add more tonight....

So off to the media blaster it went.

And back it came.

With all the usual horrors revealed

So onwards and upwards and Sill replacement.

On with some bracing bars and off with the old outer sill and lower rear wing section to gain access.

Image

And the kidney panel (although this car has the later '86 on, "not shaped at all like a kidney", panel!)

Image

A clean up and treat some surface rust.

Zinc Primer

On with the new Kidney bowl

And more Zinc Primer

Simples...

Nice that the parts covered in tape won't need paint...some saving there .....;-0

Why did you tape up the wing tops and not have them blasted Jon?

Wing tops, door skins, roof panel. Any flat-ish areas we strip by hand, even though I trust the guy doing the media blasting I have had problems in the past with distortion so don't take any chances these days.

Watching with interest Jon, has the makings of something special! Shocked at how rotten it was in places, it looked pretty nice from the initial photos.
