Should i stick with the origianl colour?
Hi
I have a 1970 2.2 911t imported from California, it is now ready for paintwork, the original colour was Burgundy but i wanted to do it Grey like the Steve McQueen Porsche 911 S.
Monday is decision day and i would like some input from you guy's please.
Regards
Jeff

For my 2p worth:
Paint it how you would want the car.
If the car (any car?) is deemed important (ie worth a lot) in the market place stick to the original colour.

Does it have the original matching number engine?
If not, originality is not a worry so go with slate grey.
If it is matching number then it will be worth c. 20% more in the original colour so you'll have to decide whether you like grey enough to suffer that sort of hit.

It's amazing how often this question comes up......the vast majority will tell you to go with the original colour and whilst I think this should be the case for certain special cars, I would always go with whatever makes YOU smile......
....it's your car!
....it's your car!

Paint it whatever colour you want (preferably a period-correct Porsche colour though).
However, Burgundy looks great on an early 911 ...

Re: Should I stick with the original colour?
I posted a similar question when I joined the DDK fraternity last year.
I am still waiting for the new rear quarter panels as they have yet to be manufactured / delivered from Porsche (~5months and counting) this is giving me more time to decide on ‘what colour’ . I to like the slate grey though if my car was originally burgundy I would stick with it, it’s a great colour this is however my opinion. There is much advice in sticking with originality. I hope this helps……….

Re: Should i stick with the origianl colour?
Ok i think i may have asked the incorrect question then.
Who here has a 911t that has changed it's original colour and who hasn't and stuck lock stock and barrel with originality?
I think that would probably make my mind up.

Re: Should i stick with the origianl colour?
Somebody changed the colour of my car back in the mid 70s...and the door cars and the seats...and the MFI pump..
During my conversations with Alan he urged me to return to the 'original' colour...
Ended up keeping the non-original colour..can you guess what it is....
That being said as so much is now not original (gearbox added to the list above) I am rather indifferent to possible effects on its value.
I'm also wary that the car in its original colour would be more characterful than the owner!...

Re: Should i stick with the origianl colour?
I bought my basket case 911T 1973 in 1988.
It was guards red on outside and where there was overspray...
It was originally Viper Green as on the inside under the carpets and where that red didn't reach...
In 1989 when it went to the paint shop (me and my one-car garage) i found a pale shade of yellow off a 356 which i thought would mask most of my body work skills so i painted it that yellow.
I had also painted an MGB GT in the shade and a hot rod too.
I love the colour.
It also got a 2.4E engine once and now has a 3.2 with several mods all over it.
Simply, my car, do what I want.
Style and fashion/popular trends change and today, if in doubt, paint it original, but is that really how you want it?
I would think Alan is dead right about keeping it original colour, he has his finger on current trends and high-end restorations (as opposed to re-builds like mine).
I think values do depend to some extent on colour, a bright pink RS will sell but the same RS in original White would sell for more.
I know it is a T after all so seen by some as the low end of the 911 ladder, but they are great cars, and lighter too.

Re: Should i stick with the origianl colour?
A) Did you buy this car solely as an investment?
B) Did you buy this car solely to enjoy as a source of pleasure?
If you answered 'yes' to question A, I'd say paint it as per original. But bear in mind, looking at a Porsche solely as an investment means you're only ever going to have half the fun...
If you answered 'yes' to question B, then do what the heck you want...
If painting the car burgundy means that every time you open the garage door you'll think 'Yeah, looks nice!', but painting it Slate Grey meant that every time you open the garage door you'd think 'Oh wow! That's my car! God, I love that colour!', then the answer is plain to see. Presuming you bought the car for your pleasure, then follow your heart.
But then I'm probably not the best person to ask, as I am sure many on here would tell you...
