Hessisch Oldendorf, 2013

Spent the last weekend with Decapman travelling to HO in his Ratte. To my astonishment we managed circa 600 miles with little more than a slack fan belt and a blown dipped headlight bulb in the way of attrition.

Anyway, some Iphone photos....

Setting off from the secret barn in the heart of the Garden of England Thursday evening:

Now I know essentially it's a VW show but I was pleased to see some Pork (as Vic might say) and this mean looking '65 (huge wheels but stock interior) was the one I would have taken home given the choice. It was last seen on Saturday evening four-up with a certain Mr. Seume in the rear:

Here is a shot of my trusty co pilot, he didn't get a look in with the driving till we hit Harwich on the journey home.
Because we were traveling in die Ratte it was decided to dispense with our normal tweed and brogues attire and not shave too, I think Steve carries this gritty urban cool look rather well.

On to the show where we pitched up about 2 in the afternoon after driving through the monsoon.

If you are not familiar with it the show at Hessisch Oldendorf or Holden Hessischdorf as Steve insisted on calling it occurs every 4 years. it is put on by a local family the Grundmans and takes over the whole town.
The streets are cordoned off so the town centre is only accessed by classic VWs or Porsches if you have pre registered and that number is limited to about 750 vehicles I think. Enough to jam the small town centre and is supposed to be for stock cars, rat look are frowned upon by the organizers but that doesn't stop a few ( particularly Brit owned buses) from sneaking in

The beauty of it lies in the rare coach built cars and rarities such as Schwimm wagens which are there in abundance.

Like these Enzemans:

Where else in the World would you spot a gaggle of Schwimmwagens ( the last one I know of that sold a couple of years ago went for $185,000) :

Quite wonderful

Though we missed it several owners took to the local river to display their capabilities
Next time maybe,.

There was a pretty amazing swap meet with amazing prices too, how about € 600 for a Porsche orange bar hood badge!

It's not all cars though, here we have someone photographing a wing mirror
We were admiring her technique:

Just like Ferryman, always takes a winning shot even with his eyes closed!

No it's always been Hessisch Oldendorf
Or Hacken holdingdorf as Steve says

Are you perhaps thinking of Bad Camburg near Frankfurt, also a 4 year meeting, next one due in 2015
Similar concept VW meet centred around a town

They do know how to put on nice vintage VW shows

Unlike Herr Marcus I was never involved involved with VWs so didn't know the difference between 21/23 window Sambas, Barn Doors, Lowlight/Razor Edge Ghias, etc. etc. Still pretty clueless, I imagine, but there was plenty of each to help hone my spotting skills:
