Gut wrenching – all the more reason for all of us to carry decent extinguisher (or preferably a plumbed-in system). Only once have I had to watch a car of mine burn, but a passer-by stopped and put the fire out with a Halfords hand-held unit.

Miura is the THE most beautiful car ever made. No exceptions. In this day of rarified values, I hope a) the insurance pays out and b) it is (somehow) rebuilt/re-created.

I was photographing one of these last week. It had been in a garage fire and was rebuilt by the factory, albeit a long time ago. With the price of these now, I expect this one will be saved.

My favourite car ever. So sad.

Mike - weren't you looking for a project?

Very sad to see. The location looks like Wales Farm Road just off the A40 in Acton. Anyone know who the car belonged to? I'm sure I have seen a Miura (or 2) in the window of Landmark Cars recently which is not far, hope it wasn't one of theirs.
The force is strong in this one ......

Just awful. Maybe time to revisit that fixed extinguisher idea.

Having the wrong temp spark plugs doesn't cause a fire? Isn't it more likely to be a leaking carb or fuel line? Either way you hope a garage would spot this.

(Like Chris Turner did with my 912!)

Very sad......

Must have been a heartbreaker.

What are the expert ddk opinions here on the diagnosis......

If the wrong spark plugs were used is the owner inferring incomplete combustion? cylinders running too hot? raw fuel in the exhaust? High resistance in the plug wires? Hot coil? Would any scenario of wrong plugs not have produced immediate poor running? Would a more experienced driver have realised there might be a running issue before it caught fire? What knock on effect from wrong plugs would have caused the fire just a mile or two from start up?

I'm interested from experts in electrical issues that might explain this. It might be useful for us all to know.

Regards
Mike

Ps. I see the fireman did his best to try and melt his own hose while attacking the fire!

I think the fact he stopped the car after the 1st problem occured ... then the HR Owen mechanic who was following told him to drive it back to the workshop might be a big factor here when they could have recovered it on the back of a low loader

puff of white smoke .... petrol dripping onto a hot exhaust can cause white smoke before it finally combusts ( I know this from when I returned to my VW beetle to find a fuel line leaking fuel onto the the hot heat exchanger !!! )

Wrong spark plugs or incorrectly fitted .... think thats more of a red herring ?
