Rev counter not working

My rev counter has stopped working , I have a pulse, if I earth the instrument the pulse stops ? any ideas ?

What model/year ?

Was the rev counter working correctly previously ?

Anything else changed ?

The car is a 78 SC fitted with a 27 RS MFI engine, it has 3 spades + TD - It did work, nothing else changed.
