Swepco v The Others

A discussion recently centred on lubrication for older Porsche gearbox units. You can guess that Swepco came up, with some protagonists suggesting that though good, the oil is no different than, say, the oils available from Shell, Mobil, etc. Is it just a clever marketing ploy that has given this oil such prominence within the Porsche community, or is really that much better? The point I’m making is this; if it IS so marvellous, why haven’t the big hitters in the lube field followed suite? Are we just being too cynical? Personal experiences and comparisons would be appreciated, please.

I replaced my gearbox oil in my 915 box with swepco & it made a noticable difference to the shift

(Is this fabled Swepco to be found somewhere in CENTRAL London? I'm thinking of buying some on my next trip there as Sweden is a bit of a developing country when it comes to this Swepco stuff).

I think you can only get it from Berlyn Services http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/osc/ but I may be wrong.

I recently change my oil and I'm using Swepco (very messy and I hate the smell of gearbox oil at the best of times but Swepco is really strong especially if you make a mess like I did  ). I have noticed an improvement but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra. I don't have enought experience to make the call.

I have no experience of Swepco oil, but surely by simply changing the gearbox oil anyway you're going to notice a difference/improvement, whatever brand you decide to use?

If you put in semi-synthetic (like I mistakenly did when I first got my car) you'll notice a change: leaks and poor shifting.

Swepco is thick, sticky stuff (excuse the technical terms) and I noticed a distinct improvement when I switched to it.
