68' SWB Beauty - Why sell at Auction??

Post by sdelan »

Morning All -

I think this little beauty has been mentioned previously but I do wonder why such a lovely car has ended up at an Auction?? :?

Surely this car advertised privately would sell easily and give a better return to the owner by the time the Auction fees etc are taken into account....... ??

regards
Sean

The car was purchased at auction and so now I guess it's just as easy to sell at auction.
Some folk don't want to bother trying hard with a sale, they just want a sale.
That car has a 'story' so it might be troublesome to sell privately.
I think it's a great looking car and could make a very nice buy for someone.

Ah yes - thanks Jason - I remember that exchange but a useful reminder that all that shines is not gold!

Still a very pretty car and I guess the (hopefully well informed) market will determine what the value is.

I think Sean was correct in his post above. This car was bought at Coys last March - Spring Classics for £35,932 according to their site and sold at Silverstone the weekend just gone for (I think) £28,200 after commissions. I'm still sad that I missed out last year, but I suspect there may be more to this than meets the eye.

(There were more posts to this thread - I know, I posted one - what happened to them?)

I had the opportunity to look around it outside in the bright morning sunshine a few weeks back and, to me, it didn't bear close scrutiny. Panel gaps were very hit & miss (the nearside door fit I remember as being particularly awful). Not saying it's not a pretty car but still needed working on to make as nice as the photos depict.

Hopefully the new owner is happier that the last. :)

Check out the 'dealer speak' that goes with it. If ever there was a warning about so called 'specialists' this is it. If a prospective purchaser asks about the history I wonder what the embellished drivel will be?

Mike

Well I just asked the questions.......

Can you tell me who carried out the restoration please and when this was done?

Is this the cars original colour?

Does the car have it's original engine and gearbox?

Do you know how many owners and miles and is it an original UK car?

and this was their response.........

Several top Porsche people did the work.

Original ( rare) RHD uk car

Not original colour inside, was black, now is far better.

Original everything and has a Porsche factory Authenticity document.

Had a replaced gearbox from factory one.

As good as it will ever get!!

I think I'll pass :)
