Hi chaps!

Been a lurker on here for a while, always had a huge interest in Porsches since I was young... I now work at a Porsche garage and thought it would be an ideal time to try and find a late 3.2 or SC to backdate as I can make use of the facilities and know how!

I'm 19 so my budget isn't nearly as grand as some of the other builds going on but my clear aim is to backdate with fibreglass long hood, fibre 911s bumpers front and rear, fibre duck tail and possibly fibre front wings. Strip the interior and keep it as bare as possible so to save weight. I like the 'outlaw' style so maybe something along those lines..

I've seen a couple of SC's so far, the chap was asking £6k for them, both runners but full of rust unsurprisingly. However I would like to hold out for a 3.2 with the G50 gearbox and slightly more power, is this worthwhile or shall I just go for one of the SC's?

You can be expecting a build thread in the near future... I can't wait, I've been working so hard and saving every penny to make this possible!

Personally, I wouldn't get hung up on SC's , 3.23's ,G50's etc

Find the best car you can .... which in your budget means find one that is as rust free & original as possible. Half the work with restos can be undoing previous bodgers mistakes

if it was me .. I'd be after a LHD, 915 boxed car

My budget for the car is £6000 tops really. Which from what I've found so far is a rusty but running SC.

The cars are both good - they were sold near pristine a fair few years ago both used as daily drivers and have been neglected. So pretty original but rusty!

Why a LHD out of interest? I've driven left hookers but I find it more awkward overtaking.

915 clutch is a lot cheaper than the G50 but I've read a fair few times that the G50 box is substantially better?

I think you might just find an SC with a solid shell for that money. I did the same about 18 months ago. You won't be concerned about the bolt on panels if you're back dating. You need a cosmetically challenged car with sound body and mechanicals. Good luck!

Cheers for that Jonny! Agree but I'm struggling to find one without serious rust on the sills... Maybe prices have gone up since you bought yours, in fact they probably have! Where abouts did you source yours from out of interest? Cheers

Very flippantly I thought that you boys that worked in the business were just like estate agents! That is, you keep all the best cars/houses for ourselves

Good luck Christian. I personally think you'll struggle to find anything half decent for £6000. Those days are long gone. I also would not get to hung up on the SC versus 3.2 thing. Yes a 3.2 with a G50 box has the later style air vents (post 85) and a nicer gear change but rust is your biggest problem. Plus rust can consume a big chunk of your budget to sort out. Save a bit more and buy the right car you won't regret it.

Not many ddkers know this because I don't mention it much ... But I much prefer lhd in an aircooled 911. The driving position is better because the drivers seat and pedal box re better aligned ( 911's were designed to be lhd) The are other things too .

915 vs G50 ? The 915 is a lovely gearbox , just needs slightly slower shifts. Those who day it's a bad box have probably only driven worn and tired ones

I'd be so lucky Neil! My boss has first dibs on anything nice unfortunately as he decided he wants pretty much everything, or he doesn't until I show an interest and he soon changes his mind

I have managed to find a few people with projects, looked at a back dated SC with rust issues for £10k but then the guy decided he wanted £12K as if it was far enough out of my budget in the first place! Second was a cream SC which was very rusty for £6k.. And now I've found a SC again in blue, running with tax and mot that will need a small amount of welding to get it through its next MOT, costing £6k. Thanks for your thoughts about whether the 3.2 is worthwhile compared to an SC, probably for my budget an SC will be fine. A real project of a 3.2 went up on ebay the other day and sold in one day for £6k. I've got a few friends who are professional welders, so I might call on their services! And I also have a very good painter who's very cheap! So between calling on various people I reckon I might be able to do it on my current budget. I'm too impatient to save anymore

Thats a good point! I drove a lovely '72 911 the other day which the chap had spent the last 11 years restoring (eat your dinner off the bottom of it!!) and the driving position like you say was definitely on the wonk! The only Porsche I've driven which was a left hooker was a 959 and being worth lots of money I didn't very comfortable in it, even though the driving position was fine aha!! Sounds like the 915 will do me no problem, plus like I said the clutch is a lot cheaper!

just what everybody says, get the best you can afford.

Took me 2 years to find something I could work with. Still ended up very close to scrapping it one point.

Has now taken far too many years to get where it is, looking stunning and being assembled.

Not sure how Suffolk folk there are but East Anglia generally has a few of us, I am in Essex for example.

Thanks Simon! Where abouts are you in Essex? I'm on the Suffolk/ Essex border in Ipswich. I'm still hunting for a project car.. Came close to buying a 964 targa but my boss ended up buying it before i could, don't ask :@
