72 Hotrod - my new project

Having fully got the early 911 bug , really enjoyed my RSR rep (road trips, trackdays, sun and rain) I've decided in the mildy obsessed way that I think any regular DDKer will recognise, that I can make a classic 911 work as a day to day vehicle...

having bought a fully running really nice car to build into RSR spec, I've decided to do it the other way round this time, mainly for cost reasons

i explored lots of different options, ebay auctions, private sales etc, but the point of a hotrod project is you might as well start with a dog if you are going to chop it up anyway...

am now the proud owner of a 72 car that came with 73 engine, 14" wheels, a 901 box and a few other non standard parts... and a bit of rust :)

luckily i dont think i paid silly money for it

the car is being stripped currently, next stage blasting, then metal repairs then paint

On the subject of rust NO-ONE reading should ever think there is such a thing as a rust free pre IB car... i went to Tuthills and SVP yesterday and saw plenty of evidence... including a 65 "only ever lived in Cali" car...i kid you not EVERY panel was pinholed

another reason why I am starting with a shell...

the project will evolve but the general idea is 2.7 mfi RHD street car, maybe narrow arches but prob RS, flat engine lid, S front bumper with a few nice details, cibies with yellow lenses, wheelarch mounted oil cooler, recaro sport seats and basketweave trim, twin exit exhaust. 7 and 8 wheels hiding refurbed S spec calipers

as we stand:

most of that brown is glue and / or sepia thankfully

floor is ok, sills are shot

off to the powder coaters at some stage..kind of like a poor mans magnus walker at this stage. eagle eyed may note thats an S spec oil tank

hopeful of being done by Jan / Feb!

cheers Dan

Good luck Dan, I'll be watching with interest especially as I have a similar project coming up.

Good to have a completion target of Jan/Feb - which year were you thinking of?

i know what you are saying darren...but so far in 2 weeks gone from nothing to acquisition, to stripped shell and I think a date with some lead shot or peanut shells on Tuesday !

the 2.7 engine is already in bits with a slightly scary list of parts needed in my inbox!

so 2013 is the aim

chartreuse...find myself wondering would it be too lairy for day to day? I do love this look albeit I am not doing an ST nor using minilites but still, directionally it works for me...interesting use of std front bumper rather than S

off to the blasters at 10am tomorrow... fingers crossed theres still plenty of metal when it comes back !

engine now swapped for cash + RS rear quarters and original recaro sport seats. V tempted by blackwatch / black leather like these (are they yours Mike?)

Image

but not sure i could live with it so suspect it will be cord or black and white pepita (which they are now). any other ideas hit me with them

has anyone on here fitted those v thin heated seat elements?

or know how to find a Becker Mexico that you dont need to sell your right bollock to afford??

I will be running a RHS wheelarch oil cooler and have always liked this detail...which will be shamelessly copied from Haasad's thread...

In a word.... NO! :)

But usual rule applies: go for whatever colour makes your heart beat a little faster when you open the garage door or walk around the corner and see it parked! 8)

Standard front bumper, no rubber and vents for oil cooler works for me :-)

Heated seats Dan - whatever next...cruise control and air con (vintage air)

Air con is a period correct option Ian ! "kool aire" amongst others

Here's the a/c unit 'as found' in my Cali 911T. The two rubber pipes ran under the car to the (missing) compressor mounted in the engine bay, although there's little sign of any additional interior vents or switches.

Great project. I've been thinking about doing one of these myself but after buy an additional 2 cars and 1 house in the last 18 months I think patient is needed.

I get torn between thinking the way to do this is via an impact bummer strip and hot rod or as you have done get a 70/72 and outlaw. I really like Magnus' cars too and I think he has done both. I must admit I still don't understand they you didn't use your 2.4 mfi engine? Surely someone could of got 200 plus bhp out of that?
