Clutch inspection
hi all
apols for posting above my quota at the moment, lots to ask as I'm in uncharted territory at the moment.
My engines out, transmission separated... I know I need to do some work on the heads as they are corroded. Is there anyway I can inspect the clutch to see if i need a new one? What do I need to do? Just take the pressure plate off and have a look?
The car speedo said 40k when I took it apart so I'm hoping that it would be ok. There is the argument of course to replace it anyway...
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Clutch inspection
AFAIK The only way to check the life left in a friction disc is to remove the pressure plate and have a look to see how much materials is left. Also, don't neglect the release (throw-out) bearing but be warned, release bearings for 914s are expensive!

Clutch inspection
You need to check the mating surfaces are smooth with no damage (pressure plate and flywheel. Then measure against specs (eg. Thickness of friction plate, depth to mating surface on flywheel, etc.)

Re: Clutch inspection
Thanks
Im half thinking I should just bite the bullet and change it while its out the car to save any potential future issues.
Presuming I can jsut use a kit from VW heritage for a type 4?
Do I need a special tool to lock the clutch in place when fitting it?
thanks

Andrew
Speak to Jim Calvert at Stateside Tuning re a clutch, he can advise on everything that you need.
Best to change the flywheel oil seal while you're at it.

Re: Clutch inspection
morning
just spoke to James this morning.
He advised I replace everything due to the age and take the engine apart for inspection / rebuild. He is of course right.
Why would I want to trust something that hasn't run for 16 years and probably wasn't maintained properly before it was 'dumped' to rot.
So there we go need to take a brave pill and get the spanners out.
Just ordered a T4 bench stand from VW Heritage and will steal my fathers steel bench and my brothers engine lift... and probably ask for help on an even more regular basis:-)
I'll post some pics as I go
thanks
