I have a soft spot for these type of cars. My first “weekend toy” was a Porsche 550 Spyder replica. I still miss that car but I also remember selling it because it just wasn’t that practical. I called it a half-hour car because after 30 minutes, you wanted out! This Roadster is what I would’ve loved to own. It is by far the best built Porsche recreation I have ever seen. It is no wonder these cars cost nearly $70,000 new. The craftsmanship far exceeds any other manufacturer in the industry. Then again, Intermeccanica is not your average replica builder. They have been handcrafting automobiles for well over 50 years. In fact, they first started building 356-bodied cars almost 40 years ago. As they say, the proof is in the pudding.
A fellow PCA member here in Orange County owns this car. Unfortunately, he and his wife don't have time to enjoy this car so they asked me to help share it with fellow enthusiasts. This particular example is truly stunning. The body panel fit and finish would rival any Porsche. The glasswork is superb. A lot of this quality has to do with the fact that they use many of actual Porsche parts when assembling these cars. Also, this car is not built on a 40-year old VW pan, but it is built from the ground up on a well-engineered space frame. The net result is a car that is very tight, solid, and drives better than most restored 356s I’ve experienced.
Unlike the Speedsters, this Roadster has everything you would want from a creature-comfort standpoint. It was ordered with nearly every option available. Options include:
