Just a note to say hello, I'm new to the forum and starting to become familiar.

I recently imported an irish green 1969 912 from the US which is currently undergoing some minor work.

Not sure if this appropriate, but I wondered if anyone can give me some advice on registering the car and the protocols involved. I've spent a fair amount of time on the DVLA web sites but the information is somewhat confusing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I want to get the car on the road as soon as possible before the chill sets in.

Hi there and welcome!

First of all - we need photos!

Registering is easy(-ish):
1. You'll need the customs form to show you've paid the duties on shipping+cost of car etc
2. Get the car insured on the chassis number. Most specialist insurers will do this for a limited period and issue a certificate.
3. Get the car MOT'd - again, on the chassis number.
4. Get proof of the vehicle's date of manufacture - from Porsche or PCGB etc – plus the original title (or copy)
5. With this lot, go to your local DVLA office and complete the form (can't remember what the number is) to register a vehicle in the UK for the first time.
6. They're unlikely to want to see the vehicle, so they will sort out the paperwork on the spot if helpful, or take a few days if not.
7. Job done! V5 will arrive in a few days.

When I registered my 912 in Truro, I went to the office at 3.45 on a Friday afternoon, they gave me a registration number on the spot, and the V5 arrived on the Tuesday morning. I think that was a record, though!

Keith has covered most aspects of the UK registration process - the only fact he didn't mention was payment of the registration fee (£55).

I've also found that the ease of registration depends to some extent as to which local VLA you are dealing with - the Wimbledon in SW London office for example inspect all early imported Porsches (just checking the VIN matches the paperwork) whereas the Worcester office randomly pick which cars they inspect.

I'm sure you'll find DDK a wonderful resource.

As Andy says, local DVLA offices vary greatly - the local one here has now taken to inspecting all cars whereas previously it was hit or miss.
