Boxster Bore increase

Sorry for the non-classic theme of this post but I have a question that someone out the in DDK world may know the answer to.

Is it possible to do a bigger bore conversion on the 2.5 Boxster flat 6? Is it the same as the 911 motor? Can it go up to 3.6 like the 911? Does it have the same crank?

Dyno,

As far as I'm aware there are no big bore kits available for the boxster, the done thing is to either fit a used 996 3.6 lump or a used 3.2 boxster s lump. both I believe can be retro fitted to the 2.5, but the loom needs modifying for the new ignition system which also needs transfering.

The Boxster and 996 engines are basically the same.

Capacity diferences are bore/stroke variances.

You can replace up to 2001MY engines with any of the Boxster or 996 engines up to 3.4l

2002 MY use a different wiring configuration (MOST - a bus system) which means engines from cars after 2001 (2002MY on) cannot be interchanged so easily with the older chassis (really REALLY not worth it!) You can of course use a late-model engine in a late model car.

It is best to replace the Boxster instruments with 996 (5 dials) if using 996 engine. We had a club member in Spain get (I think Roock) to convert his car using Boxster instruments and it took about 18 months to get right!

The 996 has longer intakes. To fit to the Boxster either use the Boxster intakes (easier - however with a little power loss) or mount the engine a little lower.

There are only a few different bore/crank throw differences in the set of parts, but clever mixing and matching has allowed Porsche to produce 5 different capacities - 2.5, 2.7, 3.3, 3.4, 3.6l

I haven't got Bore/Stroke sizes handy - sorry!

Is there any modification you can make that takes away the illusion of a car with two front ends and looks a bit like a pram? :P

As far as i'm aware the only alterations to make a Boxster more acceptable are limited to the owners gender. This involves a trip to a cosmetic specialist in Amsterdam, some sharp blades and an awareness of fitted undergarments for the fuller, more masculine lady...

Thanks for the response chaps.. I was just looking at the 2000 model Boxsters and they seem quite plentiful in Germany. I am considering one for a replacement for my everyday car.

Oh special thanks to Adam and Bootsy.. I guess you are big fans huh?

I have seen one pic of a boxster with a 550 style front and that looked cool. I think it was a US show picture from the net or in a Mag. the 550 inpired me to get into Porsche.

Or paint it yellow, put some hazard lights on it and start filling.

Very interesting information Mark. So I take it that the 2.5and 2.7 engine share the same crank?
Is it feasable to have bigger B&P (Heads??) on say a 2.5 motor? Do you know the biggest displacement you can get through this? Can you get 3.3 or 3.4?

it maybe more economical to buy a bigger cc version of the car in the first place.
